Why not a navel blockade of Tripoli?
To try and starve out Mommar and his supporters?

It would not include any boots on the ground and we already have ships in the area. With any luck, ships could be turned back without being fired upon. Who is going to run a blockade for that guy anyways?

If the rebels can eventually cut off land routes into the city and we have cut off resupply by sea and by air it could hasten the downfall.

Not that I condone siege warfare, but anything that makes this end more quickly and reduces the amount of ordinance used is worth considering IMO.

1. Because in the meantime, it does nothing about Gadaffi's ground and air forces near Benghazi
Hey may eventually fall, but not after a massacre.

3. You want to starve 1,000,000+ people?

4. Not sure the UN resolution would cover that
Apparently, it only gives authority to protect civilians from being the target of Quadaffi.

A naval blockade probably goes too far to fit into that resolution.

7. Navy frigates on standby as Libya action steps up
http://www.portsmouth.co.uk/news/local/east-hampshire/navy_frigates_on_standby_as_libya_action_steps_up_1_2520757

ROYAL Navy warships are on standby to assist in operations to enforce a no-fly zone
over Libya, says the Ministry of Defence.

Portsmouth frigate HMS Westminster and Devonport-based HMS Cumberland are both off
the coast of the country in the Mediterranean.

As international forces prepare for a naval blockade of Libyan ports, Captain Karl Evans,
Chief of Naval Staff, said the ships ‘remain poised to contribute to whatever form the
embargo operation, probably led by Nato, will take off the coast of Libya’.

http://www.agi.it/english-version/world/elenco-notizie/201103091612-pol-ren1068-italy_wants_naval_blockade_of_gaddafi_s_libya

(AGI) Rome - Italy will propose to the next extraordinary European Council that
the European Union and NATO coordinate naval forces to enforce a naval blockade of Libya.
The announcement was made by Foreign Minister Franco Frattini during a joint meeting of
the Foreign Affairs Commission in parliament. "We need to take action," said Frattini,
"to enforce respect for sanctions, but we must avoid, as is the case with piracy,
two operations, one NATO and one EU"

16. Tripoli is an export port for Libyan oil
Edited on Tue Mar-22-11 01:30 AM by happyslug
Except for one pipeline to Tobruk, Libyan oil is now in the ands of Qaddafi and that includes a line to Tripoli.

On the map one pipeline goes to Tripoli, the majority goes to Sirte Gulf, south of Benghazi and today in the hands of Gaddafi's forces. The only one that is know to be closes heads for Tobruk (Which is under rebel control) and Egypt.
