Poll question: Which is more important. The Constitution or the U.N. Charter
Where should our allegiances, and that of our Presidents', reside?

Are we a sovereign country or are we the enforcement arm of the United Nations Security Council?

7. I am curious to watch this play out. Congress really only has 30
days to meet in the respective committees and either declare war, extend the action past 60 days or pass a law that authorizes the use of force. It will be telling what is done. If nothing, this thing will have to end at 60 days. If they choose one of the other options, we could be there a long time.

Also, worth noting, the letter required from the President, under the War Powers Act, requires Obama to lay out the scope and duration of the action. The only word in the letter on the duration was 'rapid', which is absolutely meaningless.

10. I see. So really the President can use weapons, fighter jets and troops
... so long as he doesn't call it "war".

"Mission" would be ok.
"Operation" would be fine.
"Escalating Conflict" might be pushing it.

Just so long as he doesn't say the word-of-the day, a la PeeWee Herman, it's all good!

3. Well, technically.
The Constitution supersedes the War Powers ACT.

The president has shown that he need not follow, defend, or enforce a law that he has deemed unconstitutional.

Therefore,if Obama deems the WPA unconstitutional, he can make war whenever he wants.

4. Well i think it depends on whichever agrees with what I want to do
Obviously in the Iraq war, we should have gone along with the UN, but in the current situation, we should follow the Constitution.

11. The United Nations Security Council is an enforcement arm of empires
Edited on Tue Mar-22-11 09:12 AM by Catherina
With the exception of China, who was too big to be ignored, it's a rubber stamp for the goals of the the victors of WWII, a rubber stamp for any action the empires want.

The UN is our enforcement arm when all else would fail.

The US Constitution, with its checks, balances and mechanism for representation of the people, is the most important.

12. Did I wander onto a right-wing message board by mistake?
Never thought I'd see the day when leftists and rightists start making the same points about the UN.

13. A sovereign country, and the enforcement arm
That's why the US Government can bomb whoever and whatever it wants to, and there isn't anyone or anything that can stop it.

14. why does either have to be more important?
The UN is an international body, and ultimately only survives because its members decide to.

The US constitution applies in the US. But other countries don't have to follow it. Other countries can do things like attack us, be attacked. THe UN had a purpose. We apparently agreed with that purpose.
