TOPEKA — While state employees would have their salaries cut under the House Appropriations committee's budget proposal, the bill was amended today to exempt legislative staff.

The committee approved an amendment to the budget Monday that would cut state employee salaries by 7.5 percent for those earning more than $100,000 and smaller cuts to those making between $40,000 and $100,000. Under the proposal, those making less than $40,000 would not see a cut.

The committee met at 7 a.m. today after researchers stayed up late into the night working on the budget. The amendment was offered immediately after the opening of the meeting, as recognition of their efforts.
