"I hope that women who are considering an abortion will use this 3-day period to make good choices"

3-day wait for abortion becomes law in S.D.

PIERRE, S.D. — Women who want an abortion in South Dakota will face the longest waiting period in the nation — three days — and have to undergo counseling at pregnancy help centers that discourage abortions under a measure signed into law Tuesday by Gov. Dennis Daugaard.

Within minutes of Daugaard's announcement that he had signed the measure, abortion rights groups said they planned to file a lawsuit challenging the measure, which one said could create particular hardships for women who live in rural areas hundreds of miles (kilometers) from the state's only abortion clinic in Sioux Falls.

Daugaard, who gave no interviews after signing the bill, said in a written statement that he had conferred with state attorneys who will defend the law in court and a sponsor who has pledged to raise private money to finance the state's court fight. Officials have said estimated the cost of defending the law at $1.7 million to $4.5 million.

"I think everyone agrees with the goal of reducing abortion by encouraging consideration of other alternatives," the Republican governor said in the statement. "I hope that women who are considering an abortion will use this three-day period to make good choices."

8. You know how us women are - we wake up one morning and think abortion, then off we go
without a care in the world. Just the single-minded determination to get that abortion the very second we think the word. In fact, no woman can think of the word without running for the door immediately. Don't even have to be pregnant. We put so little thought into a decision before that decision is made that the mere word causes women to want an abortion.

I had to cuff myself to my chair just to type this post.

on my way to Austin (To avoid the ONE pregnancy termination center in West Texas).

I laughed and joked every foot to Austin.

I was one of the "lucky" ones who spontaneously aborted.

No biggie....I ate a burger and went on my merry way.

In 1979.

These are the cruel pricks who want us all pregnant and barefoot... oh, and working full-time,and keeping a spotless house.

11. Too bad the Pine Ridge elders couldn't see their way towards women's
reproductive rights and opened that women's health clinic on their land. Short sighted and misguided. There is no doubt in my mind that if that woman chief had succeeded in getting the clinic opened at Pine Ridge providing women's health care (and abortions), the reservation would have been a better place for it in light of this legislation.

Wake up women! Your rights are being slowly stripped away! I'm so damn frustrated at this generation's apathy. They have no idea how hard fought these battles were, and how difficult they will be to fight again....

14. The law as it stands is unconstitutional and doesn't have a chance of being upheld by the SCOTUS.
The government cannot force people to listen to the anti-choice sermons of a religious organization before making a private medical decision. That's nothing short of government-enforced "church". Not even Scalia and his woman-hating cronies are going to be able to argue THAT as "constitutional". No effing way.

Since there are few clinics that provide abortions, women will have to either travel there twice or find/pay somewhere to stay for the time. Seems counter to Roe v Wade, another example of trying to pass something to challenge it.

41. Who is the sponsor putting up the money for the court fight?
"a sponsor who has pledged to raise private money to finance the state's court fight"

Shouldn't a journalist be curious about that and ask that question?

"If we truly want to have less abortions, let's give these women the 72 hours they need to make this decision on their own without being coerced," Unruh said.

Um, wait a minute. What about this:

Before getting an abortion, a woman also will have to consult with a pregnancy help center to get information about services available to help her give birth and keep a child. The state will publish a list of pregnancy help centers, all of which seek to persuade women to give birth.

Isn't that coercion? I guess it's okay if the women are coerced as long as it's the state doing the coercion.

Jan Nicolay, co-chair of the South Dakota Campaign for Healthy Families, which has opposed restrictions on abortion, said the measure would invade women's privacy by forcing them to go to crisis pregnancy centers that are sham clinics set up to dissuade women from getting abortions. The law could violate federal requirements that protect the privacy of medical records, and it assumes that women cannot make decisions about abortions after talking with their families and pastors, she said.

And why, oh why, do even the people who supposedly support a woman's right to choose assume the woman needs to 'talk with their families and pastors'?

What is wrong with this country that there is always someone who thinks they know what's best for women, people who don't have a uterus and have no dog in the fight?

43. Women will use the three day wait to drive to Minneapolis or Denver
The best way to prevent abortion is through honest education, encouragement of abstinence, and access to effective contraception for those disposed to use it. The next best step to prevent abortion is to make sure all women know that there are couples desparate for children who would be happy to raise their babes in loving homes, and pay all expenses relating to the pregnancy.

All this will do is encourage women to leave the state. It solves nothing.

I think it's imperative that a network be formed to transport women to clinics in the nearest no-hassle state for the procedure. While the MEN fight this out, women still need access to abortion services without going through this type of humiliation.
