"Can we call someone to help him?"
I took baby girl to the creek today, bought some bread, went to feed the geese.

One of them there had a broken wing. He (or she?) was alone while the other geese were with someone else.

My daughter felt bad for him. Wanted me to just up and call someone who would be able to come down and take him in. Someone who would care for him and fix him up.

"Can we call someone to help him?" she asked me - and I just stopped.

Somewhere I am sure there is a person who works in the dept of natural resources who cares. I would have, if able, caught him/her and took them home - but am not sure what all I could do at that point.

What hit me though about it all was that she did not ask questions that we so often hear the RW ask. She did not care about anything else but the fact that this one little goose was broken and needed help.

There was nothing about 'drug tests' or 'how would this goose use the bread we toss him'.

It was a simple "how can we help?"

A 9 year old little girl stood there tossing bread to a goose and trying to help him/her without even thinking about anything political. She saw a need and just wanted to fill it.

2. Call the local humane society, they probably have the name
of an organization that will catch the bird and nurse it back to health. I know we have such a group in our area. Maybe even the library would have the name of such a group.

6. Sad story. and a link to all wildlife rescue in the US.
http://www.southeasternoutdoors.com/wildlife/rehabilitators/directory-us.html

When I lived in NJ we had a county program for wildlife rescue and rehab. I took
a few injured animals there.

A couple of years ago I saw a small rodent type creature in the yard.
I couldn't figure out what small rodent would be out in the snow and
freezing temps in January. It ended up outside my back door huddled in a corner
with it's back to me. I couldn't see it's front. Took a picture and went to the vet
to see if they could figure out what it was. They couldn't figure out what it was.
They gave me a phone number for North Country wildlife rescue. Called them told them
the situation. They asked me to put a cardboard box over it. I did that. They took my
address and said they would be there in 20 minutes. When they showed up we removed the box
IT WAS A HAMSTER. A DOMESTIC HAMSTER. The guy picked it up and put it in a glove
to keep it warm. Said they already had a few hamsters.

After some investigation I figured out that my neighbors didn't want him anymore
so they released him into freezing temps. The neighbor never admitted to it.
I never talked to them again. They moved away. I can't say I miss them.

The hamster was adopted.

I hope you find a wildlife rescue in your state.

7. your daughter
is beautiful.

She understands more than many "grown-ups".

Similar things have happened in our family. There are many wildlife rehabilitateors out there (at least here in NH). If this ever happens again, and you have the time and are so inclined, try calling a local vet or spca or Audubon society and asking them for a contact. We've had an owl, pheasant, several quail, blue-jay, flying squirrel and snowshoe rabbit pass through our lives.

Thanks for sharing this SS-

:grouphug: to you and your daughter.
