More states looking to cut jobless benefits-to minimize the increase in unemployment taxes
More states looking to cut jobless benefits

A growing number of states are looking to cut back on jobless benefits to minimize the increase in unemployment taxes businesses pay. State officials are concerned that these tax hikes could deter companies from hiring.

Some states, such as Florida and Arkansas, are debating reducing the number of weeks that the jobless can collect state unemployment. Others, including Indiana, want to limit the number of people eligible for benefits.

The changes generally would not affect the nearly 4.3 million people currently receiving state benefits. And, for those who qualify for state benefits, the proposed measures shouldn’t have an impact on their federal unemployment benefits, which can last up to another 73 weeks.

1. This is shameful.
Do you realize how little employers pay per employee for unemployment taxes? Even taking into account amounts owed to both state and federal, it probably averages less than $2 per week. If a business is so cutthroat they can't swing $2/week per employee, why the hell would you even want them in your state? This Republican race to the bottom is ridiculous.

These Republican policies are downright shameful. Equally shameful (if not more so) are the complicit Democrats who are not standing up and fighting these sorts of measures tooth and nail.

2. For every federal dollar spent on unemployment benefits, $1.74 comes back to the local economy.
Way to shoot themselves in the foot.

Of course, they can get away with it because OUR side doesn't get this messaging out.
