So cnn has this guy on who headed the "cleanup" effort for TMI...
Edited on Wed Mar-23-11 05:20 PM by PCIntern
Now first of all, please allow me to say that when the cnn logo comes on, it looks like the word 'cum' to me...I'm either getting tired or delusional, but really...pretty insane on my part I suppose - but can you blame me? I'm subjected to this network around the clock, since Lockup has better ratings than the "End-of-the-World-as-we-know-it Show.

Secondly: I consider myself a survivor in a sense from the TMI disaster, and I remember this guy spouting lies thirty-two years ago and he's no better at lying now than he was then. He is stating that if you follow the government's advice, there's nothing to worry about.

That statement alone makes me want to buy a Geiger counter, and I live 10000 miles away...see: nothing was really spouting from that reactor and then all of a sudden, babies aren't supposed to drink the water 100 miles away. OK...so what if the kid is 2 years old? Then it's safe, right? How about 18 months? Is is still safe? If it is, how about 16 months? Not safe? Then what happens in the two months? Or four months? Is it statistical WHEN IT'S YOUR KID??

But nothing's going on...it's perfectly safe. Well, not really: those poor technicians in the plant are probably radioactive-tan by now, but I'm sure they'll be all right...at least for the next day and a half...IMO, I believe that those right around the reactor are walking dead/sick now and that's why the Japanese Government hasn't done all that much to bring in help. There's nowhere to evacuate anyone to on an island that small - small as far as radiation plumes and groundwater infiltration are concerned - and anyway, Liz Taylor died, which in fact really did upset me - yes, I'm that old and remember seeing her films in the theaters. which brings me to the point of my post: the subject today in the office was "the four most beautiful women in hollywood" My answer: Elizabeth Taylor, Ava Gardner, Sophia Loren, and Lena Horne. Opinions vary of course, but it sure was a distractor: when I told the office staff and patients that Taylor had died as it came over the wire, two people said "Oh no!" and three people were just stunned. The very young people didn't give a crap - it was interesting.

can you tell I'm tired???

1. Oh ya, Three Mile Island
I remember them lying to us back then to. And then releasing those staged photos of Jimmy Carter to keep the sheep calm.

President Jimmy Carter touring the TMI-2 control room with (l to r) Harold Denton, Governor Dick Thornburgh, and James Floyd, supervisor of TMI-2 operations, on April 1.

(See how Carter's left hand is turned wrong? Obvious photoshop!)

3. Isn't that...
...the other guy's hand? I'm not saying you are wrong about it being staged, but that looks like the other guy's hand. Carter's hand is in his pocket.

6. I really can't talk about TMI. My best friend since the age of 4
was with her husband who was working at TMI when the accident occurred. She was fully into the mindset that nuclear power is safe.

She had 'cysts' in her breast that had to be drained every 6 months in her late twenties, she was 19 when they were at TMI. Physicians never tested the fluid that they were draining off, and she finally had a biopsy of the multiple sites, and finally the fluid was checked also, and she was diagnosed with a very aggressive breast cancer that 'isn't commonly found in a woman your age'. She was 31.

She was asked if she'd been exposed to radiation and she always said no. I've seen the studies since TMI, and there may be no connection between her being there, and what happened to her.

She's dead now, and I've always wondered about her being at TMI when it happened.

8. I just wish that I could prove it...
they, as I, came from a very small town in GA. Miles away, but in the wrong place at the wrong time.

I do remember reading about the studies done by a citizens group from Harrisburg, and the study mentioned people who had moved away. I still think my friend was a death by TMI.

Good luck to you and I still don;t like discussing TMI.

11. This is what a real exposure looks like. This is the US in 1951. This is a fission reaction
there is a 20 year study on TMI showing zero deaths and zero disease from the incident.

Unlike this which had real impacts.

13. Stuff it...
the studies that I read challenged the NRC and the Gov. of PA, and actually looked at the disease(s) among the people there that were discounted by people who wanted the nuclear industry to thrive.

Oh, again, stuff it.

14. Sorry , facts are a shocker to some.. Here is the 20 year study and a NEJM
Edited on Wed Mar-23-11 09:48 PM by BrookBrew
link to above ground testing data. This trumps "i think"

PITTSBURGH, Nov. 1 – In a 20-year follow-up study of mortality data on residents living within a five-mile radius of Three Mile Island (TMI), researchers at the University of Pittsburgh's Graduate School of Public Health (GSPH) found no significant increase overall in deaths from cancer. The findings were published Friday, Nov. 1, on the Web site of Environmental Health Perspectives, http://ehis.niehs.nih.gov, a journal of the National Institutes of Health's National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences. The paper will appear in the March 2003 issue of the journal.

16. If you say so, but I've read different studies...
so again, stuff it, your 'facts' may come from a nuclear friendly group. I'll look tomorrow, but still stuff it.

18. Feel free to post. Pretty sure the Uni. Pittsburgh and the vast data they compiled
are not "nuclear friendly" just does not fit the meme...

remember, this is real. Whatever happens will be far less than the outcome of this..

Anyhoo, carry on and I hope that no one that you care about ever dies, even maybe from this shit.

21. This is from an advocacy site. Mine is peer reviewed data from a University using public money.
plenty of people I care about have died. Just not from radiation.

I am posting real information. You may want to try JAMA, NIH, or some real sourced data.

BTW your source links to an article stating this.

10. My friend passed in 1983, he was 23 years old
both his parents died with cancers about 2 years prior to that. For that family 100% mortality within 4 years.

Hard for me to think about what lies ahead for Japan.

12. Well probably a lot less than what happened in and around nevada and cal.
when we detonated dozens of nuclear weapons in open air ranging from .10 to 1megaton..

This is a significant event. A few hundred decays an hour in tap water is so insignificant when compared to this.

17. 131 decays in 8 days. Again here is a 250Kt detonation 400 miles from LA
basing projections on this data would be an intelligent thing to do. I mean a teeny tiny fraction of the impact of this.
