NH Senate votes to end $30 vehicle surcharge
CONCORD, N.H.—The New Hampshire Senate has voted to eliminate a $30 surcharge on motor vehicle registrations.

The 19-5 vote on Wednesday sends a bill to the House to end the surcharge that was set to expire anyway this summer. Gov. John Lynch counted on renewing the fee in his budget to pay for highway department spending. The fee raises $45 million a year.

House Republican leaders also support ending the surcharge. The proposed House budget would end the fee and cut deeply into highway spending instead.

The Legislature adopted the surcharge two years ago to help balance the budget.
