Hot dogs for better health? Actually, yes
Hot dogs for better health? Actually, yes

If given the choice between eating a hot dog or enjoying some rotisserie chicken, you may want to consider the hot dog.

That's because hot dogs, as well as pepperoni and deli meats, are relatively free of carcinogenic compounds, according to Kansas State University research.

J. Scott Smith, professor of food chemistry, and a K-State research team have been looking at such ready-to-eat meat products to determine their levels of heterocyclic amines, or HCAs. These are carcinogenic compounds found in meat that is fried, grilled or cooked at high temperatures. Studies have shown that humans who consume large amounts of HCAs in meat products have increased risk of stomach, colon and breast cancers.

Ready-to-eat meat products are meat or poultry products that come in edible forms and don't need additional preparation or cooking.

1. dandy.
Well cooking oil is relatively free of carcinogenic compounds, too. So maybe I'll just belly up to the deep fat fryer with a straw rather than barbeque a chicken.

6. But many people GRILL their hot dogs...
causing the same carcinogenic compounds. This study microwaved the hot dogs. Not my preferred way of cooking a dog.

11. My uncle went on a "hot dog diet" and lost 60lbs in 4 months...
All he ate was hotdogs, either boiled of fried, cut up on a plate.. no bread/buns. He used mustard and ketchup to dip them in. I am thinking about trying it myself..

12. Uggh... After 48 hours if that was all I was allowed....
I'd be starving myself. Surely he ate something else, even if he ate them on their own?

15. Well, he did eat some salad with dinner once in a while
Nothing but lettuce, tomato & cucumbers, but other than that, it was 2 hotdogs for breakfast, 2 for lunch and 4 for dinner..

13. Good to know the non-grilled 100% beef hot dog we get when we visit
the local Costco is a good choice. ;-) It's steamed, not grilled. Plus, it's only $1.50!

There's a salad on that menu, too. Judging by the ingredients, however, it's a calorie overload...

:woohoo:

you face salmonella.
