Of course. Westboro Baptist. My guess is that Liz knew that too, given her AIDS activism.

4. Westboro thrives on this attention |
|
but frankly I know many average Americans who deserve just as much if not more recognition and attention from the public as Elizabeth Taylor. I'm not a fan of Hollywood. They are paid very well for doing very little, which is more than I can say for average hardworking Americans. I'm just not enamored with celebrity anymore. Sorry for those who are --- am I forgiven?

|
There was a local young man killed in Afganistan and they came out here and prostested his funeral, he wasn't a celebrity. It's just wrong no matter who you are to have your funeral protested my these people.

but I'm not more opposed to them because of ET. I'm more opposed because they went after average Americans. They are media hounds that deserve no attention whatsoever. That is what they thrive on.

18. No one here has claimed to be more opposed because of her celebrity. |
|
The OP simply stated that the Westboro church would be protesting at her funeral. The same type of statements have been posted here about other funerals (non-celebrity... usually military) where those idiots come out and protest. Usually military funerals.
There was nothing in the OP post that made Ms. Taylor's celebrity status relevant to the issue. You are the only one who brought it into the conversation.
Many celebrities have died without these assholes protesting at their funerals. They aren't going there because she's a celebrity. They're going there because of all the work she has done for AIDS.
I'm sorry.. I just don't get it. No it's not un-American to be unimpressed by celebrities. To each his/her own. But this post really had nothing to do with her celebrity status at all until you brought it into the discussion. I guess you just wanted us to know that you aren't star-struck. OK.. now we know.

10. Taylor used her celebrity to change the face of the Aids epidemic |
|
She stood by her friends and helped to change the public's false perceptions of Aids and its victims.
Without her efforts, I believe that we wouldn't be so far in finding a cure.
Shame on you for your willful ignorance where she's concerned.

with celebrities, and their opinions and their sometimes efforts to bend society for the better. I'm just not one of these awestruck people. Sorry if I don't meet expectations of expected beholden-hood....I'm cynical. I've never paid attention to or been enamored with movie stars or famous people. Is that un-American behavior? Too much is all about money. We saw the promoters turn Michael Jackson into a new profit center upon his death.
RIP ET. I've enjoyed your movies.

That lady is one who GAVE. She's a known philanthropist. When she gave her name to a cause, she WORKED for the causes too. She didn't just give lip-service to them. This is about the Westboro fucked up Homophobes who are going to protest her FUNERAL because she helped GAY PEOPLE. That's totally fucked up and I dearly hope they meet their match on this one.

They have no power and no influence other than what society grants them.
The best response is no response: a complete news blackout.
A good, old-fashioned shunning is clearly in order.

I hope there are hired "security guards" to keep these people as far away from the funeral as the law will allow.

Will remind people of all the good things she did in her life
This law firm (I refuse to dignify their construct that they're a "church") doesn't protest at the funerals of drug kingpins, gangbangers, or rapists - usually at the funerals of those killed in the service, or folks like Taylor.

Phelps announces that he's going to picket somebody's funeral, and the media are all over him.
He lives for publicity. He's well known only because the media keep covering him.
