First Photos of the "Fukushima 50" (5 already presumed dead from radiation)
"Please Continue to Live Well, I Can't Be Home for A While"

http://www.good.is/post/first-photos-of-the-fukushima-50-please-continue-to-live-well-i-can-t-be-home-for-a-while/

"The first photos of the Fukushima 50, the team of men currently attempting to prevent a nuclear meltdown at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant in Japan, have emerged, and they're simultaneously inspiring and heartbreaking.

On the one hand, the 50, who have since been joined by 150 others, are all that's right in the world, true symbols of selflessness and sacrifice for the greater good. On the other, they're also heartbreaking reminders of the horror Japan's recent tsunami wrought —five of the men are already presumed dead, and others have said they're certain the radiation will kill them eventually.............."

4. I think the presumption is that it was the radiation that killed them, TEPCO is on 'info lockdown'

8. so we know they're dead
OK. The article wasn't clear on that.

TEPCO better buy these people all the booze, drugs and sex they want for the rest of their (potentially shorter) lives.

11. tepco is on "info lockdown"? really? then why do i keep seeing them on tv every night

giving out "info"?

"the presumption" -- for the second time, of *who*?

there is no "fukushima 50". there have always been more than 50 people working on the crisis. the men are rotated in & out so as not to accumulate too much dose.

3. Given the history of nuclear power
they are probably sealed in a chamber filled with radiation. no one can pronounce them dead, because they can't enter

5. Dear God!
I think they should at least give these poor, brave souls supplies of medication before they begin this work...so that, when they're in isolation and know they're dying, they can find relief from suffering.

6. No proof they're dead whatsoever. But hey why not right.
Sure they're limited to a dose of 250mSv, which is only 1/4 what is needed to cause radiation sickness. And that's all checked every shift by the TLD's they wear, not to mention the SIPD's that they all are carrying. But we'll just claim they're all dead from radiation poisoning because that just sounds so cool.

10. Did you not realize that this story is not dramatic enough the way it is? We're Americans! We
can't possibly be expected to settle for some other countries standard for terrible disasters. We need them to be BIGGER! BETTER! BADDER! and 24/7 X-TREME disasters!

14. I would if I spoke Japanese. I seriously considered volunteering down at the embassy.
But I doubt they need a fat gaijin who only speaks English running around their plants. Though I was a qualified radiation worker, so I might still have been useful.
