$5000 to reserve a spot in a 200-person doomsday bunker, 1000s of applications for a spot
Edited on Wed Mar-23-11 09:27 PM by Liberal_in_LA
With all this gloomy doomsday like news, many are making a run for the hills. To prepare for a possible apocalyptic event in the U.S., many are looking into bunkers. CNNMoney reported that sales at companies that build these emergency shelters have seen their demand skyrocket.

These doomsday shelters run the gamut. From something you can purchase for a few thousand dollars to reserving a spot in an elaborate shelter designed for hundreds. One of the companies mentioned in the CNNMoney article specializes in building mega shelters in the middle of nowhere (e.g. grasslands of Nebraska) and sells spots for a few thousand a pop.

Vivos, a company that sells rooms in 200-person doomsday bunkers, has received thousands of applications since the massive earthquake in Japan, with reservations spiking nearly 1,000% last week. And people are backing their fear with cash: A reservation requires a minimum deposit of $5,000.

7. If we have an apocalyptic event...
...and you live in say, New York or Florida, how are you going to get to a doomsday shelter in Nebraska? Apocalyptic pretty much implies that things are dire, so I would suspect that planes wouldn't be flying and roads wouldn't be drivable.

figuring they'd get caught up in a Rapture style event. The worst thing for the fundies would be to realize that science was real, and they didn't listen.

The NE gene-pool is pretty tight, but nearly so as other areas of th country, where a divergent gene=pool seems not to exist at all...:scared:

50. Well, if said apocalyptic event is the Yellowstone calder going off...
NE, as well as most other Midwest states, would be a wasteland for decades...and all those that sought underground "salvation", would be buried under ash and mud.

Being in NE, I figure if the caldera blows, life expectancy is about 2 hours, and the effects would begin being felt on the East Coast within 6.

It would be a serious, "oh shit" moment.

Wife in dress. w/apron wearing high-heels w/makeup and lipstick on, and smiling while getting a meal ready to cook, son/daughter calmly sitting at a table getting crayons to use in a coloring book. Husband in a suit, peacefully sitting in a lounge chair with his legs crossed smoking a pipe, while reading the last newspaper that will ever be printed...Meanwhile above them, supposedly the H-bombs are or have been dropped and utter catastrophic chaos and nuclear destruction ensues...how surreal...just like an old Twilight Zone episode would be ...heh!!

They tried to make it look like everything would be "normal", but never mentioned that if a nuclear exchange happened, survivors would emerge to complete devastaion and almost certain death if near a city from massive amounts of latent radiation. Growing up in the 50s in NYC was a hoot..."Duck and Cover"...nice idea, if you don't live in a prime target area. battered by bricks and a lot of glass shards tearing through oner's body while hiding under a flimsy desk at school, that would ignite about a millisecond before I would, always made me feel safe...:D

46. Donald Fagan's "New Frontier"
Yes we're gonna have a wingding
A summer smoker underground
It's just a dugout that my dad built
In case the reds decide to push the button down
We've got provisions and lots of beer
The key word is survival on the new frontier

Introduce me to that big blonde
She's got a touch of Tuesday Weld
She's wearing Ambush and a French twist
She's got us wild and she can tell
She loves to limbo, that much is clear
She's got the right dynamic for the new frontier

Well I can't wait till I move to the city
Till I finally make up my mind
To learn design and study overseas

Do you have a steady boyfriend
'Cause honey I've been watching you
I hear you're mad about Brubeck
I like your eyes I like him too
He's an artist, a pioneer
We've got to have some music on the new frontier

Well I can't wait till I move to the city
Till I finally make up my mind
To learn design and study overseas

Let's pretend that it's the real thing
And stay together all night long
And when I really get to know you
We'll open up the doors and climb into the dawn
Confess your passion, your secret fear
Prepare to meet the challenge of the new frontier

The likelihood of the operation being run by grifters who will simply take the money and build nothing? The impracticality of such a structure housing masses of people for any length of time? The chances that-- even if the first two points weren't problems, your fellow panic fans would probably lock your ass out long before you ever reached the damn thing?

Edited on Thu Mar-24-11 12:13 PM by Geoffrey_Lebowski
to invest in something like this ... not the least of which being that in the event of some kind of apocalypse, you're not likely to be able to GET to one of these shelters in time unless you're within a few mile radius at most. Then there's the fact that the rent-a-cop at the door checking ID's (if there even is one) is going to end up with a bullet in the brain within the first 30 seconds of turning people away who haven't paid ...

You guys ever hear of the people who will take money to care for your pets for you after you're raptured? These guys are targeting the same idiots as the post-rapture pet care people.

If you want access to something like this, you better build it yourself, on your own land, and not tell anyone you did it other than people you a)plan to have down there with you, and b)can trust 100% not to spread the word.
