Charred Corpses After Western Strikes on Tripoli
Source: Reuters

(Reuters) - Eighteen Libyans killed by what officials say were Western air strikes and missile attacks in the capital Tripoli lay in a hospital morgue, some charred beyond recognition.

Reuters journalists given access to the morgue on Thursday saw the corpses of adult males on metal beds beneath green and white sheets. It was the first time foreign reporters in Tripoli were shown the bodies of alleged victims of the Western strikes.

The journalists were not shown bodies of women or children.

"They are civilians. They are not guilty of anything," said morgue worker Abdel Salaam.

4. So, question American officials when they say anything, but accept Libyan officials at face value?
Propaganda is propaganda, and the dictator asshole of Libya is a master of it.

8. So, why prefer one version of the truth over the other?
There is always dueling propaganda. That's why choosing sides in civil wars is problematic for outsiders. Gaddaffi's skill at propaganda is certainly no greater than our's.

25. Good enough to have you convinced.
The first time something similar happen, people noticed that the "civilians" were all young and male, but only had what appeared to be bullet wounds in a bomb attack. Oh.

Now it's burned males. Maybe that's just how history works, or maybe it's a learning curve. We don't know. More than a week ago Libyans in Tripoli risked exposure and execution just to report that bodies were being taken from morgues, dug up from graves, and were being stockpiled. Was it true? Was this part of it? We don't know.

Since four para's were quoted, I can only suggest scrolling down to the paragraph around the words "have not shown reporters in the capital any firm evidence".

But I can quote you this in full, a tweet from a CNN reporter on the 23rd:
4:05pm: @NicRobertsonCNN : Govt officials taking journalists into east Tripoli are lost and can’t find the so-called damaged house. Just driving around.

Maybe they were just lost, being not from the hood, and lost. Maybe there wasn't a house, we don't know.

The only, only side I'm taking on this event is simply, "We don't know". It's not easy for news consumers to wait for an authoritative report; you're brain just aches for the pieces to fit. And it's even tougher still to wait for the history book edition.

26. I remain agnostic about this conflict
I don't have any reason to believe one side over the other in all this. I am not a Gaddaffi defender, but neither do I reflexively believe the stories of western governments and press. That doesn't mean I think the west is evil either. I just think everyone in this has a hustle and I don't feel like getting hustled (not that my opinions will affect the course of history).

Yes, I know there are probably a few idealistic democrats caught up in this. But I doubt either side really has many of those. The mix of motives is bound to include everything under the desert sun, including extremists on both sides and many, many opportunists.

5. Queue the "unfortunate collateral damage" talk
Or the "unfortunately war is hell" talk.

Or the "they must have been evil" since they were on the wrong side of an invisible line talk.

Sometimes it's even "realistically we must protect our strategic interests" talk.

The talking points vary but the dead don't get to hear them anyway.
