An educational success story you won't hear in the MSM
I have taught for 5 years. Letters like this make me proud of my chosen profession and make me boil with rage when people insinuate that teachers are lazy, overpaid and ineffective. This particular student hangs with a tough crowd and has serious discipline issues but I have tried my hardest to encourage him. Here is an email I received two days ago:

Good morning AlecBGreen,

I meant to send this message along to you earlier in the week but thought you'd appreciate this bit of feedback. With last Friday's student holiday, I took (student) and his siblings on a nice long hike with the beautiful weather. We had a great time, but the point I wanted to share with you is that the ENTIRE time out he was going on, and on, and on, and on about where water came from and how the mountains were formed and what happens when the earth's plates collide. I've known him since registering him for Kindergarten years ago and have NEVER heard him make such strong connections between what he's learned in the classroom to how it's relevant to real life. In fact, I don't think I've ever heard him talk about anything he's learned with such clarity and comprehension. His mom has been kind of resigned to the fact that school's just not his "thing" and is happy enough if he's able to stay out of trouble. So it's refreshing and encouraging to hear him get excited about education for a change. In short, whatever it is you're doing, keep it up :)

(Name removed)

Thanks for letting me toot my own horn. Its stuff like this that help keep me going :)

2. Well done!
And this stuff should keep you going; you're doing it right and deserve all the kudos that you can get.

Kids can be rescued from the pits; I know this. It was a teacher who rescued me, the child who was told she'd never learn math. Blessed be!

I too was rescued by good teachers. In more ways than one I wouldnt be where I am today without the support of two (and more) great teachers in my life.
