12. What part of what he said wasn't true? |
|
Michio Kaku was spot-on, stating the disaster is unprecedented and that the situation is more dire than advertised. He also warned that engineers were moving blindly in their efforts to stabilize the situation. No nuclear engineering text book of possible eventualities had considered a once-in-a-century event, where the tidal wave wall was designed for 15-feet and the tidal wave was 25-feet. The emergency generators were in the buildings' basements, creating unimagined situations for the reactors.
My take-away: Kaku said current efforts really amounted to experiments and that the people of Japan and the world are guinea pigs. I hadn't heard anybody else state that so clearly.
So, what was wrong with it?

21. He's saying scary things, easier to pretend it's not true |
|
There was a thread several days ago (don't ask me for a link, I didn't bookmark it) regarding Michio Kaku's dire predictions about the nuclear reactor. A few posters attacked him saying that he doesn't really know anything about nuclear plant design, that he's "only" a theoretical physicist.

but I wouldn't ever call him an idiot. He's actually a pretty gifted mathematician and was an influential force in developing QFT.

24. I don't know if he is an idiot or not, but I DO know that he did NOT answer |
|
the question that Rachel asked him as the last question of the interview. He simply repeated the question as a statement. If memory serves me, Rachel asked him what we would have to do to overcome our inability to predict the correct worst-case type scenarios and to prepare for them. He gave a non-answer.

25. Sounds like a bullshit question to me, to be honest |
|
"what we would have to do to overcome our inability to predict the correct worst-case type scenarios and to prepare for them"
Is that basically asking why can't we predict the future correctly?

26. I just watched the segment and I think he did give a good answer. |
|
His answer was that engineers need to actually plan and design for these once in one hundred year events rather than to just pretend that the risk is so low they can be ignored. Sort of the same argument Taleb makes about economic crises in Black Swan.
