The Egyptian cabinet approved yesterday a decree-law that criminalises strikes, protests, demonstrations and sit-ins that interrupt private or state owned businesses or affect the economy in any way.
The decree-law also assigns severe punishment to those who call for or incite action, with the maximum sentence one year in prison and fines of up to half a million pounds.

Thousands of students protested today at the University of Alexandria against university head Hend Hanafy and the return of the university guard.

The protesting students said they were shocked that many of the members of the university guard returned to campus. They were also angry that Hanafy announced that student union elections would be regulated by Guideline 79, which bans political activity on campus.

Students had previously announced that they would not hold elections until the guidelines were changed.
