So Sunday the union at my employer votes on the contract,
and the mood at the site is all about anxiety. There is no contract yet to review. The rumor is that it won't be ready until 6 pm Saturday, while they have to vote Sunday. The rumor is that some positions wont receive a raise because they are already overpaid, while others will. The rumor is that management thinks they are paid more than the industry standard, and that most guys can't go without a paycheck for a week because of their gambling addiction. The first part of that is true, though not grossly...the 2nd part...kinda true.

Salary people, like myself, need to come into work on Sunday in case the contract is voted down. We won't be able to leave if they do. We got our training today on how to cross a security line by the hired security the company has.

If the union called for a strike, what would you do? Would you cross the line and picket, or do their job during the strike? The company takes care of me pretty well...would you risk it?

1. If you are salary, I'm guessing you are non-agreement
Right? If so the members understand that and WOULD NOT interfere with you going to work. If you are a member of a Union, any Union you should not cross their line. It's about respect.

2. Been there, done that. I'd go to work Sunday, but send out resumes
Saturday. Looking back, the outfits I worked for that pushed employees to strike weren't good place to work. Also, 2 out of the 3 went bankrupt.

6. Crossing the line and working another person's job makes you a scab.
I have never crossed a picket line, and never would. Your situation came up in a job I had once when I was management, and Mr. Brickbat and I agreed I would rather be fired than cross a line.

7. Google "Jack London on scabs".
That pretty much sums up what I think.

8. I've crossed those lines
It was no big deal. Everyone was polite, non-confrontational. Strikes are just part of negotiations.

If the pickets were to block the entrance in a confrontation, my "instructions from above" were to turn around, go to the doughnut shop of my choice, and call in occasionally to see if I should make another attempt. Well, the instructions from above didn't actually mention a doughnut shop, but I was planning an improvization.

I crossed the line to do my job, not to do a union job.

:hi:
