My husband...the "Non-Liberal"...
Edited on Fri Mar-25-11 02:59 PM by Contrary1
Now, don't you dare call him a "Liberal". He will argue with you until your ears bleed.

He has four siblings, all proud Republicans. All "pull yourself up" advocates. Funny thing is, every single one of their children and grandchildren are on government assistance of some kind.

When the siblings refused to help their down and out sister who was jobless, and without a place to live, it was their "Non-Liberal" brother who stepped up, and offered our home and financial assistance; not once, but twice. Total "help" was $25. from one sister who evidently felt a bit ashamed, when my husband told them it was a family responsibility.

While standing behind an elderly man at the pharmacy, we heard him trying to figure out which prescriptions he could afford to buy. He left them all for the pharmacist to figure out. Once out of earshot, my husband agreed to pay for all of it. The look on the man's face when he returned to pick them up was more than enough reward.

We once found a woman with a car full of kids stranded in a Kmart parking lot. Her battery was shot, and she had 150 miles to go. "Non-Liberal" husband: "Let's get her a battery, so that she and the children can make it safely home before dark."

Everyone should be so "Non-Liberal"...the world would be a much better place, and everybody's ears would be bleeding.

5. I think after Reagan made punitive statements against those in need aka
pull yourself up by your own boot stapes.... helping each other began to go out of style... Kind of like the last ten years of saying that the constitution is an outdated idea..... It is up to each and everyone of us to stand up for each other, and not buy that clap trap manipulating us to do otherwise....

17. It's interesting but true how we can tie a lot of the
current attitudes back to Reagan isn't it?

The pull your self up by the bootstraps....I have always hated that saying because I honestly don't know anyone that has not had at least one helping hand in life to move forward. Whether it be a parent, a stranger, a boss etc....we live in a society not as individual silos.

7. There are decent folks on both sides of the aisle. It's just that the ones who think

they are voting Republican don't yet realize that the old Republican
Party no longer exists, and that the Neocons and Teabaggers are
benefitting from their votes. The old-timer Republican leadership
have long since been kicked out of their own party.

8. My wife the Marxist.
She volunteers and the Animal Shelter and "socializes" cats. She volunteers at the food bank and stocks shelves. She's 70 years old.

We occasionally argue politics (I'm an Anarchist) but generally agree about the things that are important to us. Compassion being one of them.

It makes no difference how he labels himself as long as he continues to behave that way. I won't label him either!

:hi:

Thanks... this is the kind of post that goes a long way toward renewing my faith in mankind.

11. Some people are utterly incapable of empathy
I think a lot of them are sociopaths, at least to a certain degree, that is they do not just choose to be self centered, they are wired to be incapable of feeling empathy. Lucky for them the Republic Party celebrates selfishness as a virtue.

12. Too many right-wingers fail to realize that not being a liberal
Edited on Fri Mar-25-11 03:46 PM by Lyric
doesn't have to mean the same thing as "not compassionate", or "not kind", or "not human".

When you let your political fanaticism completely override your basic human decency; when you eschew ALL acts of compassion or kindness because those are things that only "liberals" worry about; when you care more about your political ideology than about helping real people who NEED help...well, you should probably take a break from politics and go on a long hunt for the human soul you no longer possess.

14. For most of his life, my dad was hung up on the label too.
The final straw that separated him from the label was when Gore ran against Bush Jr.

My ol' man thought W. was the most inept, inexperienced and poorly spoken person he 'd seen running for higher office in a long time.

So the last time he voted, at the age of 88, in Nov 2000, he pulled the lever for Gore.

My mom didn't speak to him for a week!

19. My in-laws are like that, but they always vote Republican.
They voted, for example, for Rick Scott and they would vote for him again even after seeing the extreme stuff he is doing.

Meanwhile they are very generous with individuals they bump into who need help.

You didn't say how your husband votes so I don't know whether he falls into this category but it is true, I believe, of many people who vote Republican -- they can be kind in a one-on-one situation but then turn into the meanest bastards when they are abstracted away from direct contact.

22. Funny how those religious rightwingers wouldn't lift a finger and your husband did. He is a good
man. His reward will be in heaven. You know I stopped giving to organized anything. I give to local offices that help poor and out of work people. Not even to churchs. Last year we sent to a friend $100 for his organization that helps teenagers with cloths. We help an elderly lady in the nursing home and even sent food for a couple of names on a christmas tree. I made sure the organzations I did sent not to publish my name. Once you get on these lists you get all kinds of phone calls.
