Ceremony marking the 100th anniversary of the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire - pics
NEW YORK - MARCH 25: Family members and attendees hold up shirts bearing the names of victims at a ceremony at the site of the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire March 25, 2011 in New York City. The ceremony marked the 100 year anniversary of the fire which killed 146 immigrant workers, most of them young women. Workers were locked into the factory during their shifts, preventing escape. New Yorkers watched in horror from below as workers leapt to their deaths from the windows above. Public outcry over the tragedy led to nationwide debate on workers rights and safety regulations and helped pave the way for strong workers unions.

1. So gratifying to see thousands in attendance.
I was at the ceremony ten years ago for the 90th commemoration and there may have been 30 people including the Workmens Circle. There were short speeches and flowers left on the sidewalk.

Thirty years ago when I was a student at NYU, I asked about a wreath with black crepe ribbons on the side of a building and that was the only annual notice to the world about the tragedy.

4. Not forgotten
Many were teens...a perfect example of corporate greed and why we needed collective bargaining to begin with.
