Serbians Support Gaddafi On Facebook, Libyan Opposition Calls on Int'l Community to "Do Something"

A Facebook page, Support for Muammar al-Gaddafi from the People of Serbia, reads hundreds of messages of encouragement for Gaddafi, recalling the NATO bombing of Serbia in 1999.

More than 50,000 Internet users from Serbia are actively supporting Libyan President Gaddafi through a cyber war with his opponents, a Libyan opposition group called the Libyan Youth Movement (LYM) says.

Activists from Serbia have launched pro-Gaddafi movements on Facebook, Twitter, My Space and other social networks, and Serbian hackers are trying to bring down the opposition’s websites, the LYM stated.

A Facebook page, Support for Muammar al-GaddafiMuammar al-Gaddafi from the People of Serbia, reads hundreds of messages of encouragement for Gaddafi, recalling the NATO bombing of Serbia in 1999. Many feel Libya today is experiencing the same horror, and express their loyalty to Gaddafi, urging him to preserve.

"They should know we are with them! That's how it was for us but no one gave us support!", one message read.

According to the LYM, the Libyan state run media regularly reports on activities of Gaddafi’s supporters from other countries, and Serbian ones have already been featured at the national television.

Assessing that having in mind a modest number of Internet users in Serbia, such a strong movement must have been strongly supported by different political and financial means, the LYM has called the international community to intervene.

There is no evidence on the Facebook group (link: http://www.facebook.com/pages/Support-for-Muammar-al-Gaddafi-from-the-people-of-Serbia/143360419060495?sk=wall&filter=12) postings that this is anything other than an affinity group, like others on Facebook. There is no evidence of hacking/"cyberwar", or specific accusation by LYM that websites had been hacked by Serbians. The Facebook group shows how many people "like" it - that is transparent. But the "Libyan Youth Movement" opposition group stated that "(a)fter consultations with the networks’ administrators we have assessed that more than 50,000 internet users from Serbia are actively involved in supporting Gaddafi," as if they obtained this information covertly (link: http://www.b92.net//eng/news/society-article.php?yyyy=2011&mm=03&dd=24&nav_id=73415&loc=interstitialskip).

Ominously, the "Libyan Youth Movement" states: "We suspect that there are powerful political organizations and political parties behind this pro-Gaddafi movement and we call on the international community to urgently do something about it." The opposition forces have called forth bombs and missiles. Now that want to shut down pro-Gaddafi speech on Facebook. What precisely the opposition wants the "international community" to do is left unclear, but they must "urgently do something."

1. tons of Serbian mercenaries fighting for Qadaffi:

Ever since the 1990's, Serbs have been willing to proclaim themselves the Assholes of Europe. I'm not surprised they'd take the side of a monster like Qadaffi to the point of fighting for him.

2. The Serbs are a great people.
You shouldn't malign the whole Serbian people.

3. yeah...
Croatian mercenaries (trained by US) are in the Ivory Coast...

Croatians were known to be (possibly) even more brutal than the nazis in ww2. Popular singers there still sing songs about exterminating others.

who's the asshole?
