Anyone else get "Decision Points" by George W. Bush for X-Mas? |
|
I did. My step-daughter and her husband, who know I'm very interested in politics but know nothing of my political leanings apparently, gave me a copy as a present.

But my asshole father wants to read it.
Keep in mind he's never voted anything but straight-ticket D his entire voting life. Like, since McGovern/Shriver. He's just doing it because he knows it pushes my buttons.

sorry, trying to play on the 'hate our freedom' meme, but could not quite pull it off. I'm sure you handled it with grace and aplomb, and will be donating it to Goodwill or somesuch tomorrow. If you have to keep it on "display", just keep the cover and put it on a proxy book when the rels come over for a visit.

Nice of them to try and get something you might be interested in though! If you read it, I would try it with some nice mellow chamomile tea....something to calm the blood pressure.
Might be funny too!

19. My kids know better. What a way to spoil the day. |

I'm afraid my comments would send them running. Actually, they thought **** was an idiot too. The thought of them giving me any political book makes me laugh. They don't want to hear the tirade. We keep away from political talk because our views are so different. They all think my leanings are a little too left and I think theirs are a little too right. Hence, for us, the best solution is not to talk politics. That's OK, I can join in with friends whose ideas are more in line with my thoughts.

20. I think you should read it, then give a serious review/critique on it... |
|
I actually thought about doing that myself. As someone above mentioned, it just might be funny, too.
I was watching a few "Bushisms" youtube videos a couple of weeks ago and came to the conclusion that Incurious George thought he was a standup comedian and most of his speeches were akin to doing a show.
I wonder how he felt when realized he was just a puppethead, parading around in his little costumes, telling jokes & waving to his mommy, while Cheney and the Neocon cabal ran things behind the curtains. I'm pretty sure he learned that in 2002, during the "pretzel incident".

That would be good for a tax writeoff. Or, is there a used bookstore near you? You should get SOMETHING for it!

25. I guess the thought was OK, but what a challenge to receive it gracefully. |

The problem is that they bought you a gift in an area they know you are "very interested" in. This is always a mistake.
I myself am "very interested" in Spain, so well-meaning friends occasionally give me books or other gift items relating to Spain. The trouble is, I've already researched everything about Spain they are likely to come across, and for each item I either already have it or have decided I don't want it. Either way, it makes a bad gift.
This Christmas one of my buddies, who is extremely into the Beatles, was given a recent biography of John Lennon. Guess what! He already had it. DUH.

One Christmas in the 80s I got two copies of "The Closing of the American Mind" by Alan Bloom (blech to both); one Christmas in the 90s I got two copies of "The Book of Virtues" by Bill Bennett (triple blech). Once we hit the 21st century - I stopped getting such books.
