really wants to try out the effectiveness of a Soviet era gas mask I picked up for 15 bucks.
But, logic tells me that there's nothing to worry about.

8. There is a lot of distrust/mistrust of our government, our leader and especially the media. |

people think that the are being misled, or blatantly being lied to, and are taking steps to ensure that they and their pets have some protection if it turns out that their fears are proved to be warranted. Not saying that they are correct, or that they aren't being too paranoid, but that is apparently what they truly believe.
I believe that we ARE being lied to about all of the crude oil being "disappeared" in the GOM, however, but I don't believe (yet) that the radiation is any immediate threat to the US mainland. Hawaii is much closer to Japan, therefore, the people who live there may have an increasingly good reason to become more concerned, if they are not already, as long as the damaged reactors and their spent fuel ponds/pools continue to emit radiation, and remain radioactively dangerous, and their contents continue to be exposed to the elements.
