We put our signs on the fence.
Got some foam core board in Houston (we don't have bookstores or art supply stores here in Redneckistan) and got artistic.
Painted two posters.

One has the sun on the left and the earth on the right, witht the angle of 23 degrees marked.
In the middle it says AXIAL TILT IT'S THE REASON FOR THE SEASON

The other one has a portrait of Isaac Newton on it which I painted from a famous portrait of him when he was fairly young.
It also has the title page of Principia Mathematica and a couple of the formulas for the laws of motion.
At the Bottom it says "Isaac Newton, Dec. 25, 1642 - March 20, 1746"

Here in very conservative east texas I assume those will baffle the natives. Hope we don't get firebombed.

We have low voltage lights on them at night.

4. axial tilt is why it gets cold in the winter in the N Hemisphere
On city property they have a bunch of generic decorations with lights, but they also have a lighted sign with JESUS IS THE REASON FOR THE SEASON,

I believe that is unconstitutional. And I have a law degree.

I hope the physics students notice.

DH printed out the Principia Mathematica and the formulas - he is an aggie (Stillwater) with a BS and MS in physics. He talks in equations and explains relativity to me and I tell him he's got me fooled - he sounds like he knows what he's talking about!!

Peggy, I just got a new HP notebook computer to replace my old desktop and haven't transferred my camera's software onto it yet, so that's why I haven't got pictures yet.

10. I am always stunned at how unobservant they are here.
Like the woman who said she had never seen the moon in the daytime.
And the other woman who didn't know that planets were brighter than stars. She had never looked up, apparently.

I thought that people in the country probably grew things and needed to watch the sky for the weather and the rain, but I guess I was wrong.

13. I hope you don't as well
I have an interesting story from the fall of 2001. I was living in Austin, TX, not more than 5 miles from where Molly Ivins lived but my story isn't about the wonderfulness of that liberal bastion in the middle of a red, red state. I was watching the growing nationalism and jingoism after the Twin Towers attack with growing horror. While it seemed that everyone around me was placing American flags damn near everywhere and in mass quantity (I mean, really, do you need 6 flags flying on your car?), I decided that maybe we should be thinking a little bigger. I put up a world flag in my front yard. My house was egged.

16. to counteract Jesus is the Reason for the Season
He is not the reason for the season.

It gets cold because the earth is tilted towards the sun in the northern hemisphere at night in the winter. The sunlight is spread over almost twice as much area, because the angle of incidence is steeper, which helps to make it cooler. The ratio of the area the sunlight covers is 1 in the summer, 1.75 in the winter.

Above the Arctic Circle the sun does not set in the winter but the angle is very low.

Every civilization has a celebration at the Winter solstice because that is when there is the least amount of daylight, the sun is the farthest south in the northern hemisphere, therefore the arc it cuts is shorter and there is less time between sunrise and sunset.

People get depressed in the winter due to lack of light. Solstice celebrations are a psychological need.

KEEP SATURN IN SATURNALIA

20. Love the sign ideas, but
The n. pole of earth tilts away from the sun in winter and the sun does set in the Arctic. Summer it doesn't. Eh?

Love the signs and stuff!! Cheers!!

19. We have motion detecting videocameras aimed at the fence.
With a hard drive recording all motion automatically.

So we can ID them, hopefully, if anybody defaces them.

Happy IsaacNewtonMas!
