That takes money out for taxes and follow other labor laws. There are some forms of research that are illegal. I don't know how much trouble with the law a scientist, who participated in it at the request of their employer, would be. I'd advise such a scientist to quit ASAP though. I think that if the otherwise legal organization was engaging in criminal activity that had nothing to do with scientific research that the scientist would not face legal trouble. They might want to look for another job, though, because their employers might not be in business much longer, the job experience will soon be seen as negative, and it is often morally wrong.
