Phrases that should be banned from journalism: " Tossed about like toys" |
|
I think I've seen or heard that phrase used in every story about the tsunami.

1. "Some people say ..." - FauxNews' most used phrase |
|
But then, FauxNews isn't really journalism.

9. That one really gets to me, and all the networks use it. |
|
I've actually demanded of the television, "What 'some' people? Who are they, specifically? Where's the list to back this up?"
Of course, it never answers. :(

4. Try this: The moon was a ghostly galleon TOSSED UPON cloudy seas |
|
Edited on Sat Mar-26-11 04:13 PM by SpiralHawk
Though Hell may bar the way of this cliche, it is hereby refurbished for all the crap that is being tossed at us like stinky, stanky, stupid toys by the cascade of 21st Century cataclysmae...
THE wind was a torrent of darkness among the gusty trees, The moon was a ghostly galleon tossed upon cloudy seas, The road was a ribbon of moonlight over the purple moor, And the highwayman came riding— Riding—riding— The highwayman came riding...
- Alfred Noyes tossing out The Highwayman

I avoid poetry whenever possible, but I looked this one up and read it. It instantly reminded me of this David Massengil song. I wonder if it was the inspiration. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6yK8UK-v3bc

Give us a sense, Give us a sense, Give us a sense, Give us a sense, Give us a sense, At the end of the day, At the end of the day, At the end of the day, At the end of the day, At the end of the day, At the end of the day, At the end of the day, At the end of the day, Boots on the ground, Boots on the ground, Boots on the ground, Boots on the ground, Boots on the ground, Boots on the ground, like they'd be anywhere but on the ground. These phrases are so worn out that they don't mean a thing anymore.

7. They're a high class version of "Ummm"; placeholders, nothing else. |
|
Although "boots on the ground" to me means infantry in place as opposed to aircraft pilots.

10. protesters and government forces "clashed" |
|
i.e., government thugs came in and shot people in the head for the crime of holding a sign they consider disagreeable. The "clash" verbiage needs to go.
