Rapes of Women Show Clash of Old and New India
By LYDIA POLGREEN

GHAZIABAD, India — The young lovers met at a secluded spot next to a field of wheat at the edge of this sprawling suburb of New Delhi, where the timeless India of mustard fields and bullock carts abuts the frantically rising apartment towers of the budding middle class. They went seeking solitude, but instead found themselves at the violent cusp of old India and new.

There, according to the police, five drunken young men from a nearby farming village accosted the couple last month, beating the young man and gang-raping the woman. It was the latest in a series of brutal sexual assaults and gang rapes of women in India’s booming capital and its sprawling suburbs.

.....“If these girls roam around openly like this, then the boys will make mistakes,” the mother of two of those accused in the rape said in an interview, refusing to give her name.

It is a deeply ingrained attitude that has made New Delhi, by almost any measure, the most dangerous large city in India for women. ...... A survey completed last year by the government and several women’s rights groups found that 80 percent of women had faced verbal harassment in Delhi and that almost a third had been physically harassed by men.

Nearly half the women surveyed reported being stalked......The attackers often do not see their actions as crimes, the police said, and do not expect the women they attack to report them. “They have no doubt that they will get away with it,” said H. G. S. Dhaliwal, a deputy police commissioner in New Delhi who has investigated several such cases.

2. I'm not going to bother reading the replies to this post.
Because I really, truly have had it up to HERE with misogynistic replies, and I know, I just know, this thread will attract plenty of those replies. In fact I am leaving DU because I've had enough.

Good luck, you'll need it.

3. Mistakes?
There's nothing better than sex with women. All kinds of sex with all kinds of women.

If this story is true, it isn't "sex." And these aren't men or boys. And "drinking" is no excuse.

Castration without anesthesia would be torture, cruel and unusual punishment for sure. But it would fit the crime.

5. Seabeyond - waving "bye" to you. I have really appreciated your posts.

I've just had it with what I consider to be an hostile environment for women.

P.S. Showed the post by a certain unnamed poster to my husband. He would have punched the guy in the face if the guy had the guts to say such a thing to me in real life. But that's the internet, isn't it? Hubby suggested I leave DU - I agreed with him, I'm less than a week out of the ICU trying to recover from Guillain-Barre Syndrome and the last thing I need is that kind of crap.

anyone having to go through that. I hope you continue to improve and feel better.

13. You really..
... think there is someone on DU that is going to defend this sort of thing in any way? I don't know what you read but I suspect it was nothing remotely supportive of gang rape.

14. I'm not allowed to call out any posters on DU but yeah, for instance on
one thread there was a man who suggested rape of children was just natural because after all his male dog who is a father tries to mount the female dog who is not yet mature sexually (underage.)

You know, natural. Not something we can change or get upset about. Just natural. So shut up you bitch and quit complaining that you got some dick shoved into you as a five year old.

15. I wouldn't let one idiot..
... ruin everything. Put the jackass on ignore.

There's plenty of people here who annoy me (and I'm sure I'm on plenty of ignore lists myself) but that's no reason to abandon the whole site. There's more good stuff here than bad.

are allowed to stand. (Edited to delete mistaken idea I had.) I do wish there was more sensitivity about posts that are severely triggering for those of us with PTSD from sexual assault. And I wish there were fewer (wish there were zero) men making these insensitive posts which are sometimes deleted and sometimes left to stand.

17. I did not realize the .
.... extent of the problem. I don't have much respect for the moderators here any more, they just delete posts randomly as far as I can tell - there is no consistency whatsoever. I agree with you that there should be a balance of male and female mods - I have no idea how mods are selected.

That said, you have to have a pretty thick skin to participate in almost any political discussion forum. There are a few that are tightly moderated and most of them are pretty lame.

One thing I think that a lot, probably most DUers fail to consider - DU is a BUSINESS. It is not a hobby site. Several people make their livings off of this site I'm pretty sure - and as the owners of the site they can run it as they see fit and they don't have to tell us how much they are paying themselves or anything else. Several sites have spun off to compete but none has really caught traction. But there is no shortage of similar sites out there, they are just not as busy.

Someday a better-managed site might come along. That is the nature of business and the web.

18. Got an e-mail letting me know I was wrong. I don't know how I got the idea all the mods were male
but I am mistaken. I do still think there are some posts that are left standing that are offensive to many women.

Yeah, thick skin is required and I don't have that so I should go...

8. This is the same attitude as that shown
for the 11 year old victim. You exist? You deserve to be raped!
