Re: Japan For those of you who are not flying but cannot pass up free air miles
I checked and Delta has donation to a Japanese relief agency headquartered in Japan and is doing relief work.

When Haiti happened I donated from my Capital One card air miles. I did not look at my other airlines because I had a lot of Delta miles from the last 12 years when I stopped flying.

No pain donation.

1. How does that work, exactly?
You donate your miles, and the airline company then donates a certain cash amount for each mile? Is there any way to find out how much was donated from your miles, and to make sure it was actually donated?

2. Here is what I know
Capital one converted the points/miles into cash and donated it to a relief agency for Haiti. Delta does not have a lot of details on their donation of skymiles.
http://www.delta.com/skymiles/use_miles/donate_miles/index.jsp

"Donations must be a minimum of 1,000 miles and are not tax deductible for SkyMiles members or Delta. Allow up to 6 weeks for miles to be deducted from your account.

Interested in making a charitable donation, but don’t have enough miles? Convert Partner Points to Miles today and make someone’s wish
come true."

They list major American Charities who do have oversight. I have no knowledge other than what you can find on the internet. In the past I have donated miles on other airlines to organizations that help US military personal fly home.

Other points for Japan.
