6. That aerial footage at the start was breathtaking,
Not in a good way, but amazing in the fluidity of the destruction.

12. CNN also streamed it that night
one of the better things they've done.

It just went on and on and on, kilometer after kilometer, erasing everything in its path.

I'm always amazed by the color, very different from the Indian Ocean tsunami. I keep thinking that it had to be undersea volcanic debris that was picked up to turn that water black.

16. More likely it was
river silt or topsoil. The tsunami isn't moving the water itself, it's 'just' making a wave. It's like if you shake a rope,
you aren't sending the rope anywhere you're just making it wave.

22. That's what I thought until I saw it coming ashore in other settings
and it was black as it hit, before it had a chance to pick up any river silt, before it got near a river, away from any estuaries.

I'm going with volcanic detritus.

10. I saw that the night of the quake
The night of the quake, NHK was simply posting raw, unedited video feeds, and American media was briefly rebroadcasting them with an equally minimal amount of editing. There are some sections of that video that were aired the night of the quake that NHK quickly wiped from their rebroadcasts, have declined to post online, and which will probably never see the light of day again. Personally, I wish I hadn't seen them either.

39. I saw it live too :(
There were some posting here as it was happening. It was horrific.

I have to say, I have watched numerous programs on just how excellently prepared Japan was for just such a scenario. I heard they had multiple tsunami drills and that everyone knew exactly where to go when one would hit. When I saw the first of the footage of the wave hitting farmland, I thought for certain those people must have been evacuated.

Imagine my horror as I saw cars with people in them being swept away. I will never be able to erase that image from my brain.

Got that right. Highest point in miles is only a few hundred yards away.

20. The power of water is absolutely incredible.
Katrina's 30ft. storm surge destroyed coastal Mississippi, water deluged New Orleans when the levees broke. A tsunami took 200,000 lives in Indonesia. 6 inches of rushing water can move a car.

No one realizes the power of water until you actually see it.
