DES MOINES — Rep. Steve King may be known as the heat-seeking Republican who creates controversy almost every time he speaks. His critics call him an “extremist.’’

But to others, he is the conservative movement’s “happy warrior.”

King was the man of the hour on Saturday at a forum on the Iowa caucuses.

He was praised by a slew of possible presidential contenders, including former House Speaker Newt Gingrich of Georgia and U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann of Minnesota.

Gingrich hailed King, who represents western Iowa in the U.S. House, as a key leader in the fight to repeal President Barack Obama’s health care law.

Rising GOP star Bachmann called him the “King of conservatism.”
