Here is what we are feeding our kids:

More sugar than chocolate in 'chocolate' milk.

This is disgusting. We have a record number of hungry kids in this country and we feed them crap.

1. What? There isn't enough chocolate in the milk?
Compared to the other crap they're being fed, that milk carton is pretty damn benign.

Fairly decent protein, sodium may be a wee high. Not the worst thing a kid probably eats that day.

2. Crap, it's what's on the table.
But honestly, my kids don't eat that crap. We are small farmers and though we don't raise our own milk cows, we know who does. Raw milk is the best thing you can give your kids for strong bones.

3. actually sunshine (or vitamin D), weight-bearing exercise and dark green vegetables
will do better, or at the very least, as well to build and keep strong bones.

4. Silk Dark Chocolate Almond Milk
Wowee. It's yum. Actually has Dutch Process Cocoa in it, so...antioxidants.

I just tried it a few days ago, and actually thought about those little cartons of chocolate milk kids drink at school. Wish they could have this instead.

5. Have you ever eaten cocoa without sugar?
"More sugar than chocolate in 'chocolate' milk."
My understanding is that sugar is an ingredient in chocolate.

Wouldn't that be more nutritious than chocolate?

19. Do they offer white milk as well?
Doesn't seem like much of a problem if parents don't care if their children drink chocolate milk.

24. at my school 3/4 or so of the milk is chocolate. If they have cereal for breakfast
there isn't even enough white milk so some kids eat their sugary cereal (individual plastic bowls with a plastic peel back top...complete with advertising cartoons for added brainwashing). We use our own spoons and wash them so we don't have to use the plastic ones.

In reality we don't know much about all the preservatives and man made stuff we are consuming.

I didn't realize what a Costco life was doing. We really need to get back to basic cooking.

15. It started out this way "Here is what we are feeding our kids." Did not know
the school is being included in the "we."

Suggest to the school that chocolate milk is not something you want your kids consuming.

Was told kids don't like white milk. Seems like if that's their only choice, they will learn to drink it.

18. I was reluctant to suggest that, lest I be besieged with "How dare you
tell us how to conduct parenting" responses, or something similar.

But it is a good idea.

25. But it's the milk with MUSCLE!
Edited on Sun Mar-27-11 03:50 PM by TheMightyFavog

Did you know that when chocolate milk is not offered at school, kids miss out on nutrition?

Studies show that when chocolate milk is not an option in the school meal line, many kids don't drink any milk at all. That means they completely miss out on essential nutrients they need to think, learn and grow. Replacing these nutrients with other foods and beverages commonly served in schools just isn't practical. Not only does it cost more, it actually adds more calories and more fat.

The only time I drink this stuff is the occasional splash of it in my coffee It's actually really good.
