Sailors scrubbing radiation off of aircraft carrier

Sailors aboard the U.S.S. Ronald Reagan scrubbed the aircraft carrier this week down after radiation detectors found traces of contamination.

The U.S. Navy reported the ship hit a radioactive plume from the damaged Fukushima Dai-Ichi nuclear plant in Japan during its mission.

The chief engineer for the vessel said the radiation doesn't pose any significant health risk, but it must be removed.

15. I'm thinking so they won't set off the radiation detectors at their next port of call.
Makes the locals nervous.

You would prefer that they be blind to onboard leaks from here on out and just ignore the background contamination?

11. It removes a lot of it, yes.
It drifts onto the ship in dirt and other particles. Washing them away removes a substantial portion.

10. Let's hope the radiation is all water soluble.
Otherwise, break out the brillo pads. And then the acids. What a mess.

DON'T CLEAN IT UP DRY!!! KEEP IT WET so it doesn't get airborne.

20. Every US naval vessel is equipped with a salt water decontamination wash down system. So, either
this radiation plume was carrying alot of radioactive material or this was a make work project for the crew. Note that the crew aren't wearing even the throwaway face masks.
