Republican Party of Wisconsin attacks UW professor's right to speak -- but can't spell his name right

Remarkably, RPW executive director Mark Jefferson says "the Republican Party of Wisconsin does not have to give a reason" for demanding Cronon's emails and attacking the professor publicly. In other words, the Republicans are simply engaging in character assassination.

Even more remarkably, the party mandarins could not even be bothered to check the spelling of the name of the professor they are attacking. A release sent from the RPW headquarters Friday afternoon began: "In response to Professor William Cronin’s deplorable tactics in seeking to force the Republican Party of Wisconsin to withdraw a routine open records request, Executive Director Mark Jefferson released the following statement ..."

The professor's name is spelled "CRONON," not "Cronin."

Perhaps the next time the Republican Party of Wisconsin decides to try to intimidate a prominent Wisconsinite, it should get someone who knows something about the state and its great university to do the dirty work.

1. Didn't you get the blast-fax? Spelling is for lily-livered elites.

And the "deplorable tactics" they cite? He politely recommended in a scholarly blog posting that abusing the open records process was wrong morally, politically, and tactically, and so would best be withdrawn.

I guess the "deplorable" part was to use reasoned argument, which is universally condemned as unfair by the wingnutariat since they are unable to reciprocate.

3. I read several lengthy articles written by Cronon & I didn't detect anything about his

attitude that would earn the label "deplorable". The GOP could learn a lot from Cronon's writing, which conveys extreme intelligence, grace & integrity. He was too kind in his restraint of using "deplorable" to describe the GOP -- & he would have been accurate if he had used it.
