The "if war is wrong, then you would have opposed involvment in WWII too" argument is so dumb. |
|
The world today isn't remotely what it was then. During those days there were no complicated networks of transnational interests on any scale even remotely close to what we have today. The world really was as simple as "country A invades country B, which triggers alliance C".
Today it takes almost takes a college professor to even figure out who the different factions are which are participating in a conflict, not to mention the question which external groups have an active interest in a specific outcome.
When someone starts a sentence such as "But during World War II...", this is usually a good indicator that this person's understanding of the world as a whole has not quite arrived in the 21st century.

1. Also, Nazi Germany was in a position to threaten the world's remaining democracies. |
|
Germany under Hitler pretty much smashed all major opposition on mainland Europe. Only Great Britain and the United States in the free world had any measurable capability to oppose Hitler and his war machine on a massive scale. The only other power in the world at the time that could oppose Nazi Germany was the Soviet Union, but that wasn't exactly a free or democratic entity either.
Qadhafi, for all his faults, is nothing near the threat level somebody like Adolf Hitler was.

4. War is actually still pretty simple, |
|
people with guns and bombs start killing each other. All war is wrong, but it still exists. If WWII were not fought and "won", I probably would not exist, as my dad was a veteran.
A war does not automatically become more "wrong" because US forces are involved. In fact, on occasion, it might be slightly less wrong, still horribly wrong, but somewhat less so. WWII is an example. One can never call the killing of 20, 30, or perhaps 40 million people "right" regardless of reason. But it seems to have become less wrong with our involvement.
