As you may have heard, House Speaker John Boehner is leading the charge to send taxpayer money to private and religious schools in the District of Columbia. A bill to restart and expand the failed DC school voucher experiment—the “Scholarships for Opportunity and Results Act,” HR 471—will be on the House floor for a vote this Wednesday and we need to you take action NOW!
The DC voucher program was initially passed as a 5-year pilot program in 2003 to divert your federal tax dollars to a $7,500 voucher for DC students to attend private and religious schools. Since implementation, numerous Government reports have shown that this program is ineffective and does not improve education. Equally troubling are the findings in these reports that 84% of students in the program use the voucher to attend parochial schools that integrate religion into their curriculum and have little to no accountability.
When the program expired, Congress recognized its failures and voted to phase out the program, limiting it to only those students who were already in the program. But, one of the first priorities of the new House leadership is to reauthorize it and open it to new students. And, with the Speaker behind it, it is now going to a vote by the full House of Representatives!
Call your members of Congress NOW and tell them to vote against the DC voucher program!
