Why I love DU
Edited on Mon Mar-28-11 02:42 PM by Taverner
I first discovered Democratic Underground shortly after the 2000 selection that inexorably change the course of history. At that time, I only rememver Bartcop being a place for Democratic Dissent. I don't know if it was, but there was a crosspost that led me here. And the rest, they say is history.

I love the look and feel of the site. Being a techie for hire, I know what a good message board looks like (this one) what a bad one looks like (FR - I mean, how could anyone stand the look and feel!?!?) And I know what a cheap, premade message board looks like (phpBB)

The Admins have taken a Bare bones message board, but re-coded it so that its way different and better than the original code. The site has evolved into a technical masterpiece. Honestly, Admins, you should sell a version of the DU code as the Caddilac of Message boards.

I also have seen many DUers come and go. I remember the Aswarchenegger post about a disturbing pet (one of the funnier shaggy dog stories), I remember DarthVelma, SarahBelle, and all of the DUers who have posted and left, for whatever reason.

I also remember Elizabeth Edwards on this site - shortly after her ex-husband's loss in the 2004 election. She was a very classy woman, who will be missed. Fuck I hate cancer...but I digress.

To be honest, I don't really think DU has changed that much. Take all the Liberals v Obama threads and compare them to the Kerry v Liberals, and Dean v Pragmatist threads. We're a very passionate group of people, and that passion should never go. Quite honestly, its what made DU into what it is today. If this was just a 'rant and scram' board, there wouldn't be half the passion.

BTW...I also remember WillPitt saying "Anger is a gift"

He was, and is right

3. I'm with you, my dear Taverner...
I too love DU, and I plan to be here forever!

The level of discourse (normally) and the intelligence of the top posters keeps me coming back for more.

The sense of community is palpable.

I am proud to be a contributor!

Recommended.

6. Nice post ~
I discovered the first 'left' forum after spending two years on a rightwing dominated site because I thought that's all there was. Then I found Alternet and it was like finding water in the desert. I could say what I thought of Bush without being threatened with death! I couldn't believe it.

From there I followed a link to DU in 2004 and was so thrilled to see that no one here was scared of the rightwing morons and their threats. It's hard to imagine now, but people did feel threatened during those early Bush years.

7. Definitely, the wingnuts were intimidating as many as they could
"Why do you hate America?"

"You're from the 'Blame America First' Party! Ha ha! Get it?"

"You should stand behind our president."

"Soldiers have DIED for that flag!"

and so on and so on

They also tended to look that "Get a brain Morans" guy

I wonder if he has any idea that he won the 'Dipshit of the Century' award?

10. Lol, yes, I often wonder if he even knows how
'famous' he became?

They were intimidating, I remember when the Iraq War started they told me to 'either get on board now that our troops are on the frontlines, or get out of the country and go join Al Queda'.

And that was one of the milder attacks. Death threats in PMs were common, and threats of being turned in to Homeland Security for being a 'terrorist and Saddam sympathizer'. I wasn't sure many times if someone was going to knock on the door. But I kept going back anyhow, because scaring people was how they hoped to silence them.
