Leaders speak out in controversial rape case
http://abclocal.go.com/ktrk/story?section=news/local&id=8038551

snip-

The groups represented at Monday's news conference included LULAC and the Association for the Advancement of Mexican Americans. All this was prompted by statements from about two weeks ago made by community activist Quanell X. He went to Cleveland at the request of some pastors there. He denounced the alleged assaults of a sixth-grade girl, who is Hispanic, by 19 defendants, who are African American.

But the groups today said Quanell also questioned the girl's home life.

"Transferring the responsibility of 19 perpetrators to the shoulders of this child's parents is unspeakable," said Yolanda Black Navarro with AAMA. "Comments made about this 11-year-old's way of dressing, her parents' supervision and/or lack thereof, is unacceptable."

***I am tired of how this has been portrayed by major news outlets. My heart is breaking for this girl and her family

1. Yes, it's sad
It is very unfortunate to hear Mr. Quanell X turn this issue around and point blame to the parents. If these
19 men indeed did commit this horrible crime, they need to be held accountable.

When did we start blaming victim's and their families for what criminals do? It also confuses me that, out of what appears to be a large
group of people siding with Mr. X, nobody stopped and said, "Wait a minute! That's not even an issue!" The question is whether or not this rape
did happen and if so how much time these guys are going to do. If they did not then the question is what will we do about a girl who makes false
claims.

2. "out of what appears to be a large group of people siding with Mr. X"
this is what I meant about the media. Quanell X is a whack job, and a large group of people are not supporting him. It is tragic to see what the media has turned this into. I will suggest, again, that all who are interested in this story, please access the local media outlets down here, like the Houston Chronicle. The story is entirely different from what the major news markets (Times,CNN) are reporting. I'd really appreciate it.

Welcome to DU. :toast:

5. A Florida Rep? Commenting on this story? Why would I?
the facts have been distorted enough by people outside of the situation.

Also, that's misleading. She blamed the parents. Which is still wrong.
