IRS must really be hurting......
Edited on Mon Mar-28-11 05:38 PM by Historic NY
I have a discrepancy in my 09 filings over interest reports as dividends and disability listed as income...somehow something was not put in the right box. My accountant is busy with tax season, so since neither she nor I could actually figure out what they want, she suggested going to the local district office. I've spoke with the IRS on the phone and the lady suggested I file a lump sum form and amend the return interest 1099...sounds easy right, nope. I asked her to give me the local hours for the office. M-F 8-4:30pm with 1-2pm for lunch..okay. She says wait the office is only open on Monday WTF its tax season. I go up at 9:45 pm and there is not a seat. The guard says take a number. I'm #16 wow, I find a friend there too trying to get some advice they guy next to him is sitting clutching his papers. I look over and they call #3..."three".....I remark I should have come at 8am and the guy pipes up he was here then and he is #6. I wait around for an hour or so and soon it will be lunch. I can see this is going to be an all day event. People come in with kids, most only want a question or two answered while others are getting their taxes done. They have 4 stations but only one person working.......one person for one day a week...no wonder were in the hole there isn't anyone to help those who want to pay their taxes. One lady says this is stupid...she wanted to call someone...the rent-a-guard pipes up she should call her congress person. ....yeah our new one is a teaclanger puke. I finally walk out along with 4 other people. I'm going to try the phone route again maybe I'll get lucky and get the guy in Tenn. who helped me twice over the past few years.

1. Keep calling.
You might eventually get someone who is familiar enough with your situation to help. I got lucky a few years ago and was able to fax in the information they needed and the problem was solved in an afternoon.

2. I received a letter telling me that my was being reviewed
My refund this year was all EIC. Well I was 1099-ed by both my employers and the IRS said that I did not file a Schedule C. I filed electronically and there should have been a Schedule C transmitted when I submitted my return because they were there when I checked my online return. All I did was print them off and sent them back to the IRS along with a paper copy of my 1099's. I got a letter last Thursday, dated March 7 saying they had received my info and that my return would be resolved in 30 days. My refund was in the bank last Friday, so I guess it is all worked out.

I just figure, they are working overtime to avoid paying out refunds. But there was a phone number on the letter and the name of a person handling the issue. the letter also invited me to call with any questions I may have.

I told you all that, to tell you that you should have received a letter telling you what the issue was and what you needed to provide to them. Also, the letter should have had a contact number of the person handling your audit.

I've done my taxes and many other people's taxes for years and the few times there's been an issue, I haven't had any problems getting them resolved. Once when the IRS said my cousin owed them. I got a copy of the cancelled check showing that they had paid, and mailed it to them. Problem resolved. Once when I had done a fried's and the IRS sent a letter saying she had income that she didn't claim. A credit union (she had a loan she defaulted on when she filed bankruptcy) reported her defauilt as income. That was a simple phone call telling the IRS that. An another time a refund should have been 119.00 and they sent a check for 19.00. I simply mailed them a letter asking them to review and recalculate along with the check.

maybe it's a regional thing and the IRS in your area is less efficient for some reason, but I can't think of a reason it should be so difficult for you to get this resolved.

3. Consider contacting the Taxpayer Advocate Service...
It's an independent organization within the IRS that deals with unresolved tax problems.
