As gas goes up, we should make it clear to McDonald's and the other
food chains that we are "cutting back" on our fast food purchases to make up for gas gouging. Even if you don't eat there often, tell them about it. We can't affect the Gas Giants, but the fastfood bunch might lean on them.

1. Wouldn't it make more sense to pressure the owners of the stores attached to most gas stations?
I mean, if we're going to threaten people who have NOTHING to do with higher gas prices at least the store owners kinda make sense....

5. I believe most of them make little on gas
and often they are franchisees that have little to do with the oil company.
Yet again methinks the murky world of derivatives are at hand. Without anything to stop them, now seems like a great time to steal some more.

19. Yes, that is true
Many have said to me personally that they often end up in the red in trying to keep pace with the prices...they get gouged, too.

6. I don't think the Gas Giants care about the owner/operators. I
don't think the food chains care about the workers, either, but I think they might react faster to a slowdown. I'm just trying to figure out a way to have someone with clout on the side of the public. I want all to change to efficient vehicles, etc. but that will take time.

15. Don't you think McDonald's is already concerned about high gas prices?
Imagine what they're spending on transport for the company. I can't believe McD's isn't already putting all the pressure they can on their fuel suppliers.

But as good progressives shouldn't we be happy that gas prices are going up? Higher prices mean less driving, therefore more conservation, less greenhouse gases and less dependence on foreign oil? it seems to me we need about a $3 a gallon tax on top of the current rise in prices in order to really get people working toward better use of our precious fossil fuels.

I own a gas station, and frankly, we have zero control over prices. The higher gas prices affect cash flow greatly, and whether you sell at 2 dollars a gallon or 4 dollars a gallon, the profits off gas are about the same per gallon although volume starts to go down down and profits go down too. Depending on the state you live, you also find that gross sales get taxed at the state level, so it's another hit on the business when gas prices spike. Many gas station owners are family owned and operated and live in your neighborhood. Many are far from wealthy, and try to hang on to compete with the giants.

4. Why don't we just start driving less?
McDonald's doesn't have anything to do with gas prices.

8. I guess you don't follow my logic. Anyway, if everyone starts driving less then
a lot of businesses will go under. Long term, we need to use less and less gas but these huge jumps are bad for all of the middle and lower classes. Food will go up again along with all else. It never went down even when gas went down from two years ago.

11. I have cut back on driving
99% of my driving is to public transportation and back. It's a little over 12 miles round trip. Driving to work is a 21 mile journey round trip. It saves a lot on gas in the long run because I only drive half the distance I used to. That's a hell of a lot of savings at $3.20 per gallon which is what gas costs the last time I drove.

20. I have cut back too.
Gas takes a chunk out of every pay period here. If we had public transportation I'd use it. But we don't so I have to dig deep and that shit hurts. If I drove to where the busses were, I'd be where I needed to be anyway. Just can't win.

The constant planning that goes into economizing every trip to save is hard. We have to work, there is no way around that.

Even with a fuel efficient vehicle, you still have to budget for gas.

Gas prices are rising, food prices rising, utilities rising. I mean really, can they hit us any harder ? Thank you sir, may I have another ? The sound of the bat hitting my behind.

I wish I had started a gas fund when prices were lower.

We're expected to work but can't afford the gas to get there and back. Makes no damn sense.

12. Catch 22... They will already be "feeling" it in increased transport
costs.... as will most businesses. Just make prices go up even more.

14. Yeah, WTH is the deal with prices lately?
I was shocked to see that it jumped from $2.99/gal (which is ridiculously high to begin with) on my way into work this morning, to $3.19/gal less than 4 hours later at lunch.

WTF??

16. To Hell with them all. They're both ripping off the American taxpayer!
Beef is subsidized;
Corn to feed beef is subsidized;
Fertilizer to grow corn is subsidized;
Even advertising fast food is subsidized.

And oil companies receive subsidies as well.

The CEOs rake in huge salaries while their "investors" receive impressive dividends. All while they're sucking the taxpayers' teat.

21. All in good time
Gas prices rise, people walk away from their homes, jobs go overseas.

As the suburbs collapse, more of us will be biking, walking and riding public transit.

McDonald's should really start worrying about the Soylent Corporation.

23. when it's speculators causing the rise in prices,
we aren't going to be able to do anything at all. sorry, but this is like having 5 guys playing poker and one of their wives making one guy quit. The rest will just keep on playing with our money.

Nothing in this countrys' economic system is based on supply and demand anymore, nor value to product. It's a fucking house of cards with the dealers holding all the aces.
