Qatar has become the first Arab country to recognize the leadership of the Libyan Rebels
From UPI's write-up at: http://www.upi.com/Top_News/Special/2011/03/28/Qatar-recognizes-Libyan-opposition/UPI-15261301335335/
Titled: Qatar Recognizes Libyan Opposition

The Libyan Transitional National Council is the legitimate representative of the Libyan people, the Foreign Ministry in Qatar announced Monday.

A source in the Qatari Foreign Ministry told the state-run Qatar News Agency that the recognition of the transitional council stems from its acceptance by the Libyan people.

Al-Jazeera adds that though Qatar is the first Arab state to recognize the Libyan opposition, Qatar's move came with the blessing of the Gulf Cooperation Council.

Every hour brings us one step closer to getting rid of Gaddafi. Good riddance.

1. Was it just a rumor that recognition comes in the form of oil contracts?

3. Link? Qatar was brought in as a French ally and was reluctant to join under NATO at first.

7. Not oil contracts per se--they're going to market opposition oil if they pump before the end of the
Conflict. It is not the approved arrangement after Libya is reunited.

4. Financial Times is reporting that Qatar has offered to sell rebel oil on the market

If they start pumping. However, the recognition does not appear to be a tit-for-tat arrangement and is more about helping the rebels finance the struggle.

2. This is very important news. The Arab world is sure to note its symbolism.
Thanks for bringing it here at this late hour -- at least for us East Coast DUers.

5. Yup, blessing of the Gulf Cooperation Council signals a severe lack of confidence in the dicator
He'll be out of power soon.

8. Well-said. Qatar taking the lead to legitimize the rebel gov't is certainly unexpected yet welcome.
I really like what's happening now. What a world of difference from the way BushCo conducted the Iraq war!

9. Agree completely. Knock on wood that it continues this smoothly right to the end
Still afraid Gaddafi pulls a nutter before being removed from power.

I know how you feel. I also have no doubt all the coalition leaders feel the same way but have taken reasonable precautions (spysats, informant info) to anticipate Gaddafi's moves.
