Top Execution Countries: 9 Muslim, 2 Communist…and the United States
Top Execution Countries: 9 Muslim, 2 Communist…and the United States

Of the 12 nations that carry out the most executions in the world, the United States is the only one that is not Muslim or Communist.

China is the world leader in carrying out executions, performing at least a thousand or more in 2010, according to information compiled by Amnesty International.

Unable to publish a precise figure, Amnesty reported the Chinese government was responsible for executing “1000s” last year, which put the Communist country well ahead of the second leading state for death sentences: Iran, with more than 250.

North Korea was third in executions, with at least 60, followed by Yemen (53) and the United States (46). More than half of the executions in the U.S. took place in just two states: Texas (17) and Ohio (8).

The rest of the top 12 were all Muslim societies: Saudi Arabia (27), Libya (18), Syria (17), Bangladesh (9), Somalia (8), Sudan (6) and Palestine (5). A total of 23 countries are known to have carried out executions in 2010, whereas 139 have either abolished capital punishment or no longer pursue it in practice.

6. The only "communist" nation with a casino city. The capitalist govt calls itself communist because
the word communist is like the word democracy to the ordinary Chinese person. The way they get to rationalize calling themselves communist is by saying that they are still a feudal nation and they need more industrialized capitalism to before they can become socialist. It's bears he lie of the mechanical Stalinist "stage" theories. Obviously, the capitalist factory owners have no interest in becoming economically egalitarian.

2. When people 50 or 100 years from now look back at the US in 2010
the three things that will disgust and baffle them the most are (1) lack of health care, (2) gays not being allowed to marry, and (3) the fact that the US still executed people.

4. As a percent of population, the picture would be much different.
China may still be number one, but the U.S. would be well down on the list.

10. I am not impressed by this data presentation.

1) Representing numbers as circles is a bad way of doing it, because it's never clear if they mean the radius or the area.

2) Using almost-identical symbols for hundreds, tens and units is not good pracice - it makes it look as though Yemen and the US execute more people than Iran.

3) Having the circles overlap is just clumsy.
