Wintry blasts could make this December coldest on record
December is shaping up as the coldest month on record as below-freezing temperatures continue across Central Florida today.
"The stream of very cold arctic air from Canada is flowing into Florida and dropping temperatures to below freezing," said Tony Cristaldi of the National Weather Service in Melbourne.
Cristaldi said the chilly arctic weather pattern will plunge temperatures today in Leesburg to 25 degrees.
Parts of Lake County could be under a hard freeze warning, threatening crops and other wildlife.
Other areas, including Sanford, Daytona Beach, Kissimmee and Melbourne will struggle to reach 29 degrees by 7 a.m., reports from the Weather Service show.
The temperature at Orlando International Airport could drop to 29 degrees.
December is on track to be the coldest month on record based on an average of daily low temperatures. Forecasters said the record for December was set in 1989 when low temperatures averaged 55.5 degrees.
