ndiana Senate Approves Gay Marriage Amendment
40-10 Vote Takes Place Below Empty Gallery

POSTED: 3:12 pm EDT March 29, 2011

INDIANAPOLIS -- The Indiana Senate has approved a proposed amendment to the state constitution banning gay marriage and civil unions.

The 40-10 vote on Tuesday happened below an empty public gallery, which was closed after protesters disrupted the Senate's debate of the resolution Monday.

Democratic Sen. Tim Lanane, of Anderson, argued that attitudes toward same-sex marriages are rapidly changing and the amendment would make it difficult for future changes in state law.

Current state law prohibits gay marriages. Amendment sponsor Sen. Dennis Kruse, of Auburn, said the measure would provide maximum protection for the basic family unit of society.

The Republican-led House approved the amendment last month. The measure must pass both the House and Senate again in 2013 or 2014 to go before voters on the 2014 ballot.

4. I don't understand...
Why will it take 2 or more years before voters get a say in this?

9. Each State has its own constitutional amendment process
Edited on Tue Mar-29-11 03:28 PM by jberryhill
But it is typical to spread it out over more than one session of the legislature.

The voters "have a say" in the next election for the state legislature, if this is an issue of interest to them.

The Indiana amendment process is:

http://www.law.indiana.edu/uslawdocs/inconst/art-16.html#sec-1

Section 1. (a) An amendment to this Constitution may be proposed in either branch of the General Assembly. If the amendment is agreed to by a majority of the members elected to each of the two houses, the proposed amendment shall, with the yeas and nays thereon, be entered on their journals, and referred to the General Assembly to be chosen at the next general election.

(b) If, in the General Assembly so next chosen, the proposed amendment is agreed to by a majority of all the members elected to each House, then the General Assembly shall submit the amendment to the electors of the State at the next general election.

(c) If a majority of the electors voting on the amendment ratify the amendment, the amendment becomes a part of this Constitution.

10. Thank you for protecting my marriage!
I have been losing sleep for 10 years just waiting for the day when the gay roll up on me out of nowhere and drag me away and force me to marry a man. That is really the only problem we have here in Indiana, so now that this is solved, everything is pretty much perfect. Thanks again!
