GOP Rep: I'm 'Struggling' On My $174K Salary (VIDEO)
At a town hall meeting in Polk County, Wisconsin earlier this year, Rep. Sean Duffy (R-WI) was asked whether he'd vote to cut his $174,000 annual salary. Duffy sort of hedged, and went on to talk about how $174,000 really isn't that much for his family of seven to live on. Then he went on to say he supports cutting compensation for all public employees, along the lines of what Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker (R) has proposed for the Badger State.

The whole thing was caught on tape, and it was posted to the Polk County GOP's blog, along with several other clips from the town hall. Then just that clip where Duffy talks about his salary was taken down and removed from the internet by the county party because, an official said, the YouTube clip "was being republished without our consent."

12. You probably didn't need two houses, though
Congressmen and senators need two houses, at least: the one they have in their home district, plus one suitable for entertaining in the DC area.

15. suitable for entertaining?
Bullshit.

Why should the taxpayers pay for their lifestyle? They want to entertain -- go to a frigging restaurant.

22. We pay for their lifestyle to the tune of $173k per year, per Congressman
This is the thing: I really don't mind that the Congressmen have two homes. We pay those folks quite a bit of money. And they really NEED a house that's nice enough and large enough to throw parties in--if a group from the member's district comes to Washington, they can cook up some burgers on the patio or something. (No, I am not clueless: the main reason a Congressman needs to entertain is to raise money so he or she can remain a Congressman. But...when you've got that job and you want to keep it, that's what you do.)

What I object to is a Congressman, knowing full well he was going to need a second house in a pricey part of the US and knowing full well what Congressmen get paid, complaining about how broke he is.

21. Congressmen do not need a house suitable for entertaining in DC.
Some of them share small quarters. Ours lives in DC with his family.

3. I actually have no problem with that kind of salary for a Congressperson, however...
Edited on Tue Mar-29-11 08:13 PM by onehandle
In return for that salary, the benefits that come with it, and their pension, they should be barred from lobbying or taking compensation (salaries, money, gifts of any kind) from supporters for life.

13. He shouldn't have more kids than he can support. He must
dressing them in designer clothes and feeding them gourmet meals. There are plenty of families that get by with much less for as many people.

He should be ashamed of himself.
