Like the bridge. And the island. That French thing, for the pronunciation of Mackinac.

Great show, but that's tough to hear for any Michigander.

Like I said, love you anyway, Rach. Try a visit there sometime; Mackinac Island is the only place with the unique blend of smells of fudge and horse poop.

1. I'm amazed that someone on her staff wouldn't have alerted her to
the proper pronunciation.

My son-in-law is determined to visit the island some day.

5. I'm heading to the island this spring!
I'm staying at the Iroquois Hotel.

This will be my third trip to the island!

11. Ah, the smell of fudge and horse poop, mixed with the annual Lilac Festival.

No place smells like the Island. Gawd, it's gorgeous. I used to go there twice a year every year for business weekends, and got to stay in top-notch rooms every time at the Grand Hotel.

A while ago. I look forward to going back soon, though. The Iroquois is also beautiful.

10. I stayed there on family vacation as a kid. So fun, so Gorgeous!!
I hope that at least her crummy pronunciation will help any random non-Michigan members of Anonymous to identify them.
And then expose their e-mails too.

15. I'm in Ohio and I've heard both.
Although Macinack is more frequent. Took awhile for me to figure out they were referring to the same island.

4. It happens
You get a wrong pronunciation stuck in your head and no matter how hard you try to stop, you keep repeating it.

I had the same trouble back when I was a radio DeeJay. Every time "Mississippi Valley" came up in the copy for the weather report, I always read it as "Mississilly Valley". I couldn't help myself and believe me, I tried.

9. Some presidents say, "nucular." Others get it right.
I think Rachel wants to get it right, and it's not a matter of "preference," as she implied. It's saying it correctly. It's from the Ojibway term for turtle, and the French adopted it; it's not open to debate - Mackinac is pronounced Mackinaw. Period.

Geez, this isn't how I want to spend my dime, but c'mon.

12. I didn't watch the show
So I don't know what happened. I just know that reading fresh copy to a live camera isn't as easy as it sounds.

Around our house we used to giggle at the momentary look of terror that ran across the faces of new television anchors (who weren't from this area) when this word came across their teleprompter:

Quitaque

They would hesitate for a moment, their brains telling them "say it phonetically!" Out would come:

Kwi-TOK-wa

We would laugh and laugh.

13. Faygo? Where is that? Could you ackchewally be a
Michigander, or a Michigoose?
You know, many of them say Illinois, ill in noise. But again the french would be ill in oi.
So what can I say. She's from out of town, okay.
Another one. How do the English pronounce Michigan? Mitch e gan. As they do Mitch el in, for the famous tire company Michelin.
Latinos, Mexicans, spanish speakers also call it Mitch e gan. They have a state, Michoacan. They pronounce it Mitch o a kahn.
Michelin. The french say Meesh ah leen.
Try this one: Givenchy.
