CO. Nut jobs at it again.....
"A Colorado Springs “birther,” retired Air Force Col. Gregory Hollister, has Internet blogs abuzz with what may be an illegal foray into an online Social Security data base and how he obtained a copy of President Barack Obama’s draft registration from 1980."

OK, so he broke several laws to obtain this so called information. What are they going to do to him?

I must also point out that part of Hollister's so called proof is incorrect. "Hollister said the Social Security number on what he says is Obama’s draft registration begins with the numbers 042, which would be issued to someone born in Connecticut, not Hawaii.'

My husband was born in CT and his SS# does not start with 042.

yet each of our SS numbers begin differently.

Same with my kids. Born in the same city as I was but their numbers are different than mine. And my husband too.

6. From Wikipedia
<snip>

Before 1986, people often did not obtain a Social Security number until the age of about 14, since the numbers were used for income tracking purposes, and those under that age seldom had substantial income.

<snip>

The Social Security number is a nine-digit number in the format "AAA-GG-SSSS". <21> The number is divided into three parts.

The Area Number, the first three digits, is assigned by the geographical region. Prior to 1973, cards were issued in local Social Security offices around the country and the Area Number represented the office code in which the card was issued. This did not necessarily have to be in the area where the applicant lived, since a person could apply for their card in any Social Security office. Since 1973, when SSA began assigning SSNs and issuing cards centrally from Baltimore, the area number assigned has been based on the ZIP code in the mailing address provided on the application for the original Social Security card. The applicant's mailing address does not have to be the same as their place of residence. Thus, the Area Number does not necessarily represent the State of residence of the applicant, neither prior to 1973, nor since.

Generally, numbers were assigned beginning in the northeast and moving south and westward, so that people on the east coast had the lowest numbers and those on the west coast had the highest numbers. As the areas assigned to a locality are exhausted, new areas from the pool are assigned, so some states have non contiguous groups of numbers.

So, Obama graduated from high school in 1979 in Hawaii and immediately went to college in California, a state with a rapidly growing population at the time and that, IMO, was likely to have lots of non contiguous Area Numbers. So, if he got his SSN while going to college (a reasonable assumption, right?), then it could easily be something "unusual".

8. Another thread on this
Thanks for linking the article. I had not seen it before. I covered this story the other day.

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=433&topic_id=638593&mesg_id=639362

In the article Hollister is quoted as saying he sent Obama a 1099 form. Translated this means "I knew I was breaking the law so I tried to cover my ass by pretending Obama was a contractor for me." This will not fly with the US Attorneys.

12. The first three numbers of an ssn ARE issued geographically
but it has nothing to do with where a person is born; it relates to where the card was issued. For example, my eldest son was born in the Chicago area where ssns typically start with numbers in the 320's. His ssn was issued in the Boston area and his ssn starts with 019.

14. Generally true but not always
For example if someone misread a "9" to be a "0" on an application that is all it would take to issue a number for the "0" zip code. The number would not be changed.

13. The guy is a wing nut because
A social security number does not indicate where you born, but where the social security was issued. Obama did not need a social security number when he entered college, he probably didn't get one until he had his first job, which was probably when he was in college.

It's only been in the past decade decade 1/2 (I'm not sure) that SSN's have been issued at birth.

15. This is identity theft folks
I think people are missing the point here. It's not about the number at all.

Greg Hollister is one of the original birhers. He's been shot down on every attempt, most recently by the Supreme Court.

He identified himself as an employer of Obama to the Soc Sec Admin, and got a SSN verification. He then took that and used it to obtain Obama's Selective Service Card. To do that, he identified himself to the SSS as Obama, filed an address change, and had a replacement card sent to the new address.

Now to cover his track on being Obama's employer, he is claiming to have sent Obama a Form 1099. Let's hope he did some withholding and filed a copy with the IRS.

Identity theft is a serious crime. And when you do it to the POTUS, it's even worse.
