Mennonites still helping people to rebuild after hurricane Katrina
5+ years after the disaster of hurricane Katrina and the Mennonites are still quietly going about the business of helping people rebuild and they ask for nothing in return. Not even recognition. While others are worried about red tape or who is going to do what, these generous, caring people simply show up, roll up their sleeves and go to work. Definitely worth the 2 minutes it takes to watch the report.

1. Brethren Disaster Relief is there, too
But the women don't wear plain dress (though some of them wear the head coverings).

4. My grandparents were Mennonites. Only the old order wear plain dress
my grandmother sometimes wore plain dress and a bonnet, but she'd wear blue jeans when marching against the Vietnam war or for civil rights. ;-)

12. I used to go to a Brethren church.
They are closely related to the Mennonites. We once had a vacancy pastor who was actually a Mennonite.

Many of the people in my church would save their vacations to go wherever they were needed for disaster relief. Many of them, the farmers in particular, would take time to work for the Heifer Project. That program is no longer affiliated solely with the Church of the Brethren. It is one of the best charitable programs there is.

2. We have a local Mennonite community
They are wonderful people and are always there to help when local disasters happen.

3. My in-laws lost everything in hurricane Katrina
Their house went completely underwater and had to be stripped down to the foundation and studs. The Mennonites put a new roof on their house and all they asked for in return was a hot meal.

8. Yes. There are strongly religious people who use their faith to inspire good works.
Not like the selfish, closed hating evangelicals.

9. That's an inspiring story.
It's nice to know that religion can be used for constructive purposes in the world rather than destruction and division.

10. I really admire the Mennonites. My family have a foster child in
Tanzania. He, his mother and his grandmother live in a Mennonite compound. When I found that out I confess I had more hope for his future. They are down to earth people who care about others.

11. I think Jesus would approve of this.
Of the multimillionaire TV evangelists, not so much.
