Obama Approval Rating Hits New Low
Source: Business Insider

According to a new Quinnipiac University poll, President Obama's approval rating has reached a new low.

More worrisome for his handlers, perhaps, voters now say he does not "deserve" re-election by a margin of 50-41%, according to the poll.

We're skeptical about highs and lows in polls and generally recommend the Real Clear Politics "moving averages" of all the polls on questions like presidential job approvals, mood of the nation, etc.

The RCP "moving averages" have been remarkably accurate in the past. The current RCP "moving average" of President Obama's approval rating is here. It's roughly 50%-50% amongst those who offer an opinion.

1. His approval is UP on gallup
And this poll was taken before his Libya speech.

BusinessInsider.com "concern" noted.

10. how anyone could believe his approval is up with three wars, continuing unemployment
& economic stagnation, rising prices is beyond me.

i don't care what the polls say. everyone i know who voted for him is some degree of less than enthusiastic.

3. Though I think Libya is payback to French and UK allies for help with Afghanistan and possibly Iraq
Obama lost me on this one. Yeah, our European allies called in some favors when the time came for them to shore up their own oil supply with this Libyan venture but two wrongs don't make a right and I expected Obama to be more aware of the consequences of such an imbroglio. Well, the stuff is hitting the fan and we've once again put our national clout on the line, once again it looks like we're about to be hung out to dry.

5. Interesting theory re: Obama's motives for Libya.
I do not buy the Admin's excuses, or those of the other Democrats who backed this travesty. So I find your explanation (ie; payback for our allies' help in other wars) as good as any I have found.

9. Libya Bombing Is Economic Insurance For A Second Term
Putting aside ethical and humanitarian concerns for a moment, the political calculus behind Obama's military actions in Libya seems strongly connected to economic concerns, particularly as they affect his chances for re-election.

The Libyan crisis, over the past month, has added somewhere in the neighbourhood of an extra $10 per barrel to the price of oil, and equally important, has pushed the price of oil back over the critical psychological threshold of $100/bbl. If the price of oil continues to be over $100/bbl into the summer, then the current fragile recovery (if you can call it that) of the U.S. economy will be stillborn, and America will fall back into formal recession by Christmas. If America begins 2012 back in recession and stays that way throughout the year, Obama's chances for re-election in November 2012 will be very slim.

However, if Libya is stabilized, either under one government (regardless of who leads) or in a de facto partition, then oil may climb back under $100/bbl. Of course, a return to recession would also likely drop the price of oil back under $100/bbl, but not in a way that would be helpful to Obama.

Every modern American president at this point in his first term has the same paramount goal--a second term--and all his major political actions will serve that goal. Other than impeachment, there is no greater humiliation for a president than to be denied a second term by the electorate. If a few bombs dropped on Libya in the name of humanitarian intervention can help Obama secure that second term, then bombs will be dropped without delay (as we have already seen).
