It was a very VERY bad day for Rupert Murdoch....
Parliament in London just demanded that the head of Rupert Murdoch's News International provide them information detailing the payoffs they have made to the police. Rebekah Brooks, one of Murdoch's favorite employees slipped up and admitted that the newspapers had been paying police for stories. Paying police for stories is VERY illegal. Not only illegal for the papers to make the payments but also for the police to accept them.

The article: MPs ask Rebekah Brooks for details of Sun's payments to police http://www.guardian.co.uk/media/2011/mar/30/mps-ask-rebekah-brooks-sun-payments-to-police

So far, in this news hacking scandal, the police, mostly under the influence of John Yates, have completely covered up that Murdoch's papers have been hacking thousands of telephones. Yates got grilled by Parliament as well where they discussed that while investigating Rupert Murdoch's papers, he was having dinners and lunches with the people he was supposed to be investigating. If he was accepting payoffs for tips then he was also getting bribed, basically, to cover up the whole investigation.

The article: Police lunch date under scrutiny in hacking case http://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/crime/police-lunch-date-under-scrutiny-in-hacking-case-2256734.html

The loss of police protection is going to BLOW this whole case wide open!! Once Parliament knows what officers have been taking bribes from Newscorp they will be removed and can no longer protect Murdoch and his ilk.

A slap on the wrist seems likely at this point. A few weeks ago, even that seemed unlikely, so its progress. But I doubt its such a bad day for ol Rupert. People like him don't really have "bad" days in the same way that, say, a single mother with not enough income to pay bills consistently does.

On the side, it occurred to me through your writing...

Paying police for stories is VERY illegal. Not only illegal for the papers to make the payments but also for the police to accept them.

...that we've become so desensitized to unchecked corruption in this country, I'm not surprised you felt compelled to emphasize what used to be taken for granted. :)

Roo's "promotion" and move to NYC is to get him out of the line of fire. Baby Roo and Rebekah Brooks (Wade) worked closely together. It was Baby Roo and Rebekah Brooks (Wade) who invaded The Independent and dressed down the editor during the last election. I also read a report where the scandal may go as high as Brooks (Wade). If it does, will Baby Roo be implicated? This inquiring mind wants to know!

James Murdoch, the youngest son of Rupert Murdoch, was named News Corp.'s deputy chief operating officer on Wednesday in a move that puts him a step closer to potentially taking over from his father.

James Murdoch, 38, will also serve as chairman and chief executive of the news and entertainment giant's international operations in addition to being deputy COO, News Corp. said.

He will move to New York from London and will report to News Corp. deputy chairman, president and chief operating officer Chase Carey and work closely with his father, News Corp.'s chairman, News Corp. said.
