Will we still depend on oil from the Middle East in 2018?
From Barack Obama's acceptance speech at the Democratic Convention, August 28, 2008:

http://www.nytimes.com/2008/08/28/us/politics/28text-obama.html?_r=2&pagewanted=3

So -- so let me -- let me spell out exactly what that change would mean if I am president.

...And for the sake of our economy, our security, and the future of our planet, I will set a clear goal as president: In 10 years, we will finally end our dependence on oil from the Middle East.

Contrast that promise with this news story from today:

President Barack Obama called for cutting U.S. oil imports by one third on Wednesday...

What a difference a couple of years makes.

3. The Petroleum Industry decides that!
Many Presidents since Nixon have noted how we have to get off of foreign oil. Obviously, that is either a scare tactic or lip service. Not much of anything has been done to reach oil independence in all that time. There have been fits and starts and then ... poof!

This is about the power of the Petroleum Industry. What they say goes. How do you think they can get windfall profits and pay minuscule or no taxes on that? We are beholden to them. Until that dominance and tyranny ends, then nothing a President, or anyone else, says means much at all.

This is another one of those, kind of behind the scenes, corporate takeover and control factors where we pretend we can or will do anything about a crises. The deeper we go into Peak Oil, the more profit there is to be made. Do you really think they are going to allow us to get out of this incredible crises by caring about how it effects us? It is going to assure sweet bundles of cash pouring into their huge tanks. We would have to nationalize petroleum to stop it, I think.

You may want to watch Gas Hole. It is an interesting documentary.

4. we import very little of our oil from the Middle East.
It mostly comes from Canada and Venezuela. The Europeans get their oil from the Middle East.
