Please Call Your Representative TODAY!

One hundred years today, a fire at the Triangle Shirtwaist factory < http://www.washingtonpost.com/today-in-history/2011/03/25/ABcwY3SB_story.html > on the Lower East Side of New York City killed 146 workers -- most very young women -- who were either burned or jumped to their deaths from the eighth floor windows. This tragedy sparked the rise of the labor movement in the U.S., as people across the country understood that workers should not go to work to die. (""Remembering Those Who Died"" bulletin insert available *HERE* < http://www.iwj.org/doc/TriangleFire-BI.pdf >.)

*WE SHALL NOT FORGET...*

*
Remember the workers who have died and carry on the fight for justice for workers!

SIGN THE PETITION AGAINST ATTACK ON WORKERS! < http://salsa.democracyinaction.org/o/1035/p/dia/action/public/?action_KEY=5947 >

We've made great strides over the last century, but in 2011 politicians across the country are trying to roll back the clock:*

· In Wisconsin, the same Governor and Legislature that took away collective bargaining < http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2011/mar/10/wisconsin-republicans-cut-collective-bargaining-unions > for teachers, nurses and other public workers now also wants to force workers in Milwaukee to go to work when they are sick, by not allowing any city government to have a paid sick days law < http://www.businessweek.com/ap/financialnews/D9M5NIF00.htm >. (Milwaukee passed a Paid Sick Day law in 2008.)

· In Florida, the state legislature wants to eliminate the right of cities < http://articles.orlandosentinel.com/2011-03-21/business/os-xgr-preempting-local-governments-20110321_1_wage-theft-minimum-wage-regulations > or counties to pass laws to help workers get all their wages. (Miami/Dade County residents fought hard to become the first county to pass a law against wage theft < http://inthesetimes.com/working/entry/5600/miami-dade_passes_landmark_ant-wage_theft_ordinance/ > in 2010)

· In Michigan, where folks are still reeling from the recession, the legislature just voted to take away 6 weeks of unemployment compensation < http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/03/24/michigan-unemployment-extension-compromise_n_840088.html >. Several weeks ago, Michigan passed a law < http://colorlines.com/archives/2011/03/michigan_declares_financial_martial_law_on_poor_cities--and_people.html > allowing unelected "special managers" to tear up union contracts in school districts and cities and even to disolve city governments.

· And to add to all these insults, Maine's Governor ordered that a mural honoring workers < http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0311/51871.html > be torn down at the state's Department of Labor building.

*We should not go to work to die. We should not go to work to have our wages stolen, our health and safety threatened, or any of our hard earned rights taken away!*

Join hundreds of thousands of people of faith and conscience in the fight to defend our rights as workers:

· *Sign the petition to Stop Attacks on Workers.
* < http://salsa.democracyinaction.org/o/1035/p/dia/action/public/?action_KEY=5947 >
· Participate in the April 1-4 We Are One < http://www.we-r-1.org/ > events. (More information *HERE* < http://www.iwj.org/template/index.cfm >)

· Support the ongoing struggle for worker justice. (Give *HERE* < https://www.chi-cash-advance.com/sforms/appeal623/Contribute.aspx >)

*We must carry on the struggle of the many worker heroes who came before us! *

In solidarity,

Kim Bobo
